Default Very Strange Loud Sound

When I hit the pause button, a loud, strange sound come out the monitors.
I've been working on a project in Reaper, and suddenly last evening this I began getting this sound: (To record this I used a small hand-held recorder in front of my monitors.)

So, next I removed all plug-ins in the project, and the buzz is still there.

It is not on any other projects, and the tone of its sound varies with whatever sound is on the tracks when I hit pause.

What on Earth (or elsewhere) could this be? Any suggestions.

I'm running Reaper in an rMBP, 16 Gigs, 512-SSD, interface is an Apollo Quad.

Thanks

:- Don

It's the sound of a small buffer-full of audio looping. I can tell you that much. Like you would get if you made a very small time selection and hit loop and play.

Don't know why pause would be making it loop the last buffer-full of audio.

And the confusion increases...

I tried deleting all plug-ins in the project, and I tried deleting each of the tracks one at a time. Neither helped. (No, I didn't hit save at that point.

Next I re-opened the project, the pause issue was still there, but I went ahead and recorded additional track with multiple takes on each.

Then when I hit "pause" the problem was gone.

Yes, it did sound like a tiny loop, and its tone would change with the position on tracks as if it was picking up whatever instrument was on the track.

Well, I need to go bang my head against the wall some more. Yikes!

I get this sometimes if I'm using a lot of plugins on a session sometimes.

Out of curiosity, are you using an AVID system? We have an HD Native card in our main room and our secondary room has a UA Apollo. I never have this issue in the Apollo room.

No Avid. I did notice something yesterday. I was doing some close-in editing with the loop control turned on to loop what was highlighted in a small section of the timeline. Instead of hitting "escape" to remove the selection, I grabbed the handle at one side of the timeline and slid it over to the other side.

Apparently I didn't pull it all the way over, and when I hit "play" it made that strange sound until I completely deleted the time selection.

Hmmm, I wonder if I had not actually completely removed a tiny timeline.

It's a mystery.
