MIDI Editor Velocity realtime preview !!!
Can we please have realtime preview in the MIDI editor when adjusting velocity via the handles on the notes? Currently you always have to release the mouse button to get the velocity "active"

Would that cause havoc?? As far as I know, velocity is fired with the note-on messages so that would cause a continuous re-firing of the notes while you're adjusting the velocity with the mouse. Kinda like a machine gun when you're doing the snare for example.

No there's nothing to "re-fire".
Example:
-> some 1/16 notes drawn in (to trigger a bassdrum in a software sampler)
-> playback
-> select all notes (we're still in playback mode)
-> adjust the velocity handle
=> now I wanna hear the change even if I don't release the mouse button.
So REAPER just needs to play the notes with the "new" velocity values.

I think I misunderstand.
Say my note vel is 35 and I drag the handles to 78 without letting go.
Would I hear sounds triggered with velocities of 36, 37, 38, 39 ..... 78 ? That's real-time preview, in my mind.
Or are you saying that Reaper would detect that I had stopped dragging the handles (e.g. a gap of 100? ms) and then play the notes at that velocity?

No. At least not unless you would have that section looped while playback.

Exactly (only during playback). REAPER should play the note under the cursor with the "new" adjusted velocity so that I don't have to click->adjust, click->adjust, click->adjust and so on.
Click->drag->HEAR (and drag unless it's right - then release the mouse button) is what I want.

I`m used to editing velocitiy by pulling velocity up or down on a note and hearing the end result when you let go. Works for me.
havent really got into Reaper MIDI as much as I should because I still like my old MIDI sequencer better.

Of course it works but (especially for drumediting) I would prefer instant feedback instead of having to click again and again.

I think that Dstruct means, for example when you have something looped and playing back, when adjusting velocity, upon next playback of the loop, it should sound with the new velocity even if mouse wasn't let go of the velocity handle. Right, Dstruct?

i'd actually prefer a "machine gun" firing off of midi notes as you drag the velocity handle up or down. could really help you hear the exact moments of your velocity switched samples when fine tuning.

I'm against machine gunning. Not even worth setting it as a preference.

the retriggering is like scrubbing, useful in similar ways.

Scrubbing is a bit different, it doesn't retrigger a long note as you pass by it...

A good idea, and I would really hate the machine gun option

you're definitely right about the long long notes, i hadn't thought of that
however logic could be written for notes with a short duration to be retriggered, as due to their short length they could be interpreted as "drum or percussive" notes, whereas notes of a longer duration wouldn't retrigger

+1. This is essential for quickly previewing drums/percussion hits etc among a few other workflows. The option to have it off(if not there already) is also essential.

When I need to do some fine velocity editing I either find the velocity I want using the piano roll, by clicking a key at different X positions it plays back the note I'm interested in with different velocities. = I get a new note when I want one, and just one (unless I click more than once)
But 99% of the time I just play it in or wing it. ;-)
It gets brutally compressed in the end anyway :-)
so -1 for me or at least make sure I can turn it off.

I'm for this and also a real-time preview of the note while dragging it when playback is stopped - like in logic, where it replays the note every second or so (no machine gun effect)

except for synth sounds with huge release times, which reaper would know nothing about. an option might be okay, but i imagine this could cause a real problem with sounds layering until they blow your speakers (or mute the output if you've got that option ticked)

I don't see this option anywhere in Reaper 5.20 even. How can I enable preview scrub like velocity while dragging my mouse adjusting velocity?
I select a note, drag the CC lane velocity up and down - I hear no change in realtime.
What is the problem? Where is this option you said was "Done"? Thank you.

No, sorry. What I mean is, those are all 4 check marks for options of preview and I'm not hearing anything. Only when insert / editing, but NO velocity changes are in real time. Trust me. I'm not crazy
Help? What would cause Reaper to NOT playback velocity on adjusting, even with the option correctly selected? baffling me.
I can ONLY hear velocity preview when dragging the HANDLES on the notes, NOT in the CC lane. This is correct behavior? Wow. Come on Reap. Why the limitation? Why do I have to enable handles on every note just to get real time velocity preview? I mean when you have handles enable on notes and drag velocity from CC lane it reflects in the handle - so why can't that trigger the preview too? Oversight?
I do all my velocity editing in the CC lane like many power users I'm sure, and this does not allow real time velocity preview? Wow.

Realtime preview in the CC lane would produce a shitton of noise if you adjust it in one sweep across many notes. I assume that's the reasoning here.

Bars n Pipes Pro at one time did this.... and being on an elderly Amiga, if you tweaked a whole drum track`s worth of kicks, it solemnly played every damn note, as fast as it could. But it still took about 30 seconds for a 3 minute drum track.
Longest 30 seconds of your life, listening to 3 minutes worth of kick condensed into 30 seconds. Especially if you accidentally tweaked the velocity up a little too high
Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

lol I guess technically yes that is correct. It just drives me bananas to see the handles on the note move when I adjust CC velocity in the lane. So I know it's linked, but yet only note handles trigger preview. Oh well. Problem understood now, thank you all.

Funny reading this years later. One of the first things I do in configuring MIDI is turn of 'preview notes on velocity change' to stop that machine gunning.

I think I just found a nice way to do it (for myself anyway).
I'm now leaving 'Options >Note preview >Preview notes on velocity change' on and taking 'View >Piano roll notes >Show velocity handles on notes' off, then just changing velocity with keybindings.
Mapped the actions 'Edit: Note velocity +1', 'Edit: Note velocity +10' 'Edit: Note velocity -1', 'Edit: Note velocity -10'
This avoids the machine gun, but also gives instant feedback.
Turning off Piano roll velocity handles prevents inadvertent machine gunning when selecting a note with mouse (reason I used to keep 'preview on velocity change' off in the first place)

Velocity Lane Note Preview
Hi, I'm new to reaper but I had some experience with other daws like cubase, studio one etc.
I think there should be an option to preview notes while edit velocity lanes like studio one or, cubase etc. I can't find the option if there is one already.
This behaviour shouldn't be a problem for reaper.
For example -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev6T...ature=youtu.be
