Default (FIXED) MIDI Overdub is actually extending items (a little bit)?

I've uploaded a gif to the stash:
https://stash.reaper.fm/37335/bug_overdub.gif

Seems that when recording over the edge of an item in MIDI-Overdub mode,
the item source is extended. On the first pass it is only extended by some
milliseconds, on the second pass it is extended fully.

Tested on Linux

Edit: New GIF (Using show overlapping media items in lanes)

Hi mccrabney,

maybe my title was a bit misleading. The issue isn't that items are expanded
in MIDI Overdub mode. (Even though I have to admit, I wish they weren't ).

The issue is that when recording over an existing item, that does not share
borders with another item, its MIDI source is extended by approximately 2ms.
This happens without even sending MIDI input to the track. So any items you
are just passing over are affected. When using pooled MIDI.......

I can not think of a scenario where this could possibly be your desired behavior

p.s. watch the GIF, it should showcase what I mean

Same here. I've unwillingly messed up the timing of some items a couple of times by duplicating them as the shift accumulates.

This is frustrating. I just had to go over an entire project with tiny timing accidents.
Maybe some way to reset the item length via actions could be a workaround?
