Soft/easy on the eyes themes that still do a good job with item background colors?

I've been trying some new themes but all the subtle/easier on the eyes ones don't seem to do a terrific job with item background colors. Most of them show light peaks instead of dark and the backgrounds are very faded which makes the differences between the items way less obvious. Is there anything out there like the Easy on the Eyes theme that still has the brightness/opacity of the default theme for the item colors? Or can anyone give me a primer on how to edit just that aspect of that theme to customize it for myself? Thanks guys!
