Default Setting the Signal Level into FX chain...

Does anyone know how to do this? You'd think if I could figure out the multi-OP routing for VSTi's, I could figure this out, but no.

Thanks in advance.

You mean changing gain within the chain? Use Ggain or a relevant JS effect, or even FreeG Stereo if you want a fancy slider and meter and stuff.

I use the pre-fx volume envelope. Click the automation button on the track to set it up.

Thank you for the replies, I figured out the Pre-FX volume envelope but have not had time to delve into new plugins. For now, the envelope will allow me to set the input level to the first plugin in the chain.

Default Solved

I've now discovered "item volume", hovering close to the top of the media file, the cursor transforms to a up-down arrow. It may then be dragged to set the pre-fx level down from 0. Setting "media item volume adjustment range" in Preferences, Editing Behavior, to +6 causes a line to appear in the middle of the media file, which can be dragged up or down.

in the IO window, set the send to "post fx" and you should be able to adjust the volume and pan using the volume and pan sliders that appear under each send (and independently of the track's volume and pan)!

Default pre-fx

I'm looking at setting the level pre-fx, to satisfy plugins that may respond to being "hammered", (or may distort when the feed is hot), or may sound better, or more realistic when hit with more subtle levels.

Thank you for your reply.

You can also stick a JS volume plug-in before any effect that needs a tweak on input level.

Yup. That's one of the beautiful things about how Justin has programmed Reaper... lots of diff ways to do this.

Default Wait, there's more:

Thanks again for the replies.....these days, as of some Reaper update, I can hover the mouse at the top of the track (media item) and the cursor changes to up/down arrow. At this point, the pre-fx level can be reduced by dragging down. Alternatively, there is a setting in Preferences to grant the ability to boost the level via the same action if so desired. It is a level specification for 0/+6. If +6 is selected, there appears a line in the middle of the media item, and this line can be clicked and dragged up or down, to increase or decrease the pre-fx level.....very handy indeed.

I'm pretty sure all that was there since before version 1.0 - there's so much to discover about Reaper!
