I'm not on this forum a lot, so hopefully someone will help after my drive by response here, if it doesn't help... but my first guess would be a firewall of some sort.
If you're using Windows, try disabling the built-in firewall temporarily (if that works, you'll just want Google how to open up port 8080). I personally just tested out the remote control, and after I went to the rc URL (rc.reaper.fm/yourremoteid), I clicked on the link on the success page and it hung up. I then disabled Windows firewall and got through.
Your home router's firewall would be the next thing to check if disabling any software firewalls doesn't work, but I don't think that would be needed since this is all LAN related (I am not sure though).
