Default "Marquee" select tracks in tcp/mcp

Hello!

Request:
"Marquee" select tracks in tcp/mcp
-->Rightclick drag to select tracks in tcp/mcp

Benefit:
Much faster and intuitiv. Keyboard not needed to select multiple tracks

Reason:
It slows down ones workflow if one has to permanently reach to shift/crtl key to select tracks.

Implementation Suggestion:
Itīs possible in Apple Logic for a while now and I can find requests for this feature from the year 2010.
https://forum.cockos.com/archive/index.php/t-53406.html

So I really think itīs time to add this feature to Reaper as soon as possible.

Thanks, A

People have been asking for this for ages. I want it too, but there doesn't seem to be any interest on the developer's side.

Thatīs too bad.

It would really speed up the workflow. Itīs seems strange to me
that itīs a big thing for selecting items in the arrange window but not for selecting tracks in the mixer control panel. Itīs not a cohesive workflow this way.

But who knows, maybe someday this feature will be implemented..

Cheers!

Iīm really surprised that not more Reaper Users want this work simplification.

I respect your wish but maybe you can give some practical example(s) of why you want to need this so badly ?

My 2 cents:

- Marqueeing Tracks would be "restricted" to lasso-ing contiguous tracks in TCP, needing a mouse drag.
I for all am against as little as possible mouse dragging, cause mouse dragging is one of the most time consuming actions is software, thus in DAW's like Reaper and Logic.

I honestly think shift clicking for selecting contiguous Track is faster.
(when you always have your left hand in the lower left keyboard area, where the modifier keys are, like i do).

Maybe this is abit of a temp solution for you:

When you have ReaPack installed, you will have this Action:
Script: tritonality_X-Raym_Cubase_Style_SelectTrack_On_ItemSelect.lua

When you have run this Action, you then can marquee items and this will automatically select the Tracks on which all those items are on.

So instead of marquee selecting tracks in TCP, you just marquee select items that are on those tracks, and automatically those tracks will be selected.

Thanks for your reply and your tip!

First of all "marquee tcp/mcp" could and should be optional so everyone can decide how they want to work.

In contrast to your workflow, during mixing I like to minimize the need for the keyboard as much as possible (as opposed to editing).

I would use it mainly to easily and quickly select multible adjoining ungrouped tracks for level changes, soloing, muting etc. during mixing in the mcp.

I wouldnīt group as much as I do currently if I could easily marquee two or more faders/tracks in the mcp without the keyboard.

As a windows user Iīm just used to select stuff with rightclick+darg and I donīt think itīs slower.

I use it with items all the time. So in my opinion it would make the workflow in Reaper more cohesive and faster if rightclick+darg would also be possible in the mcp and tcp.

Cheers,
A

Curious if this has been implemented one way or another in the last couple years? I'm learning the program at the moment and loving customizing things to get it feeling natural for me, but haven't found a way to make this work yet.

I thought I could hopefully just bind the action "select track under mouse" to a key near shift (used A) and left shift+A empty, I'd be able to hold those to swipe over tracks and select them, but it doesn't work.

Hi Trione,

It is still not possible to select the tracks by "rightclick drag" (without the keyboard) but there is a workaround within the SWS Extensions.

http://www.sws-extension.org/

After you have installed the SWS extensions, search for the following actions in the actions list (you can open the actions list with the shortcut "?"):

SWS/BR: Select MCP track under mouse cursor (MCP = Mixer Control Panel)
SWS/BR: Select TCP track under mouse cursor (TCP = Track Control Panel)

Select one of the actions, go to "Shortcuts for selected action"
in the bottom left corner and click "Add".
Type in any Shortcut an press ok.

You need to create one shortcut for the MCP and a different one for the TCP.

Close the Actions list and now, when you hold down the shortcut,
you can select the tracks with the mouse cursor.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Andi

Thanks for the reply.

Huh, since there is already a native command "select track under mouse" that doesn't work for this (it really seems like it should), I didn't think to look for an sws action by the same name, which might behave differently and work. Weird.

End result is it sort of works, doesn't kick in instantly like a shift/rightclick and drag should. But after a good 0.5 seconds of holding the assigned key and it starts picking up everything I swipe over.

Anywho, thanks again.
