Default Mute tool?

Is there a mute tool like I used to use in Sonar ages ago?
Where you can erase specific parts of an item by sweeping the tool over them without having to split and slip edit the item?

Using mute envelope (track or item) might work for you.

But I'm curious why you talk about slip editing. To mute parts of an item, just make a time selection, split at the time selection and remove the split part. Why would you need slip editing?

Or maybe I misunderstand what it is you want to do...

"To mute parts of an item, just make a time selection, split at the time selection and remove the split part."

Thank you, yes, this is what I am doing now. With Sonar's mute tool I could use a mouse modifier to switch to the mute tool and sweep the cursor over the parts of the item I wanted to mute or unmute; far fewer mouse clicks involved.

"Slip editing" sorry I got my terminology wrong.

I will try using mute envelopes, that will probably be satisfactory.
Thank you

this is too many steps

make time selection over items, cut (Edit: Cut items/tracks/envelope points (depending on focus) ignoring time selection)

but that's not muting.

I have a custom action

Custom: Mute Selected Area Of Items
Item: Split items at time selection
Item properties: Mute
Time selection: Remove time selection

ps - I have arrange view right-drag set to Marquee select items and time in Mouse Modifiers.

And if you want a tool, you can do it with armed actions

add the action to a toolbar, right-click it to arm. any left-click will run that action until you disarm the button or press esc.

as ever in reaper there are multiple ways to get something done... each with pros and cons....

you can use envelopes on items... and you can use a custom action as shown to split and mute...

I'd prefer a diff way [just me]... I'd use the track envelope for volume
I'd make a time selection that I want to mute and then the action to insert 4 envelope points at time selection...

with that done, just grab the line of the middle two points and pull it down to zero... effectively a mute, right?
then add that as an automation item..

Now you can copy that AI to anywhere and shrink or expand it to your needs....[hold Alt to shrink or expand]
You can copy it to other vol envelopes on other tracks...

so now I have a pretty fast way to 'mute' whatever, wherever and it remains a changeable thing in case I change my mind later

Here's what I do (but was too lazy to write yesterday when I wasn't sure what we were talking about).

I have Ctr+Shift+Left drag on Envelope segment set to "Move envelope segment". I am not sure if this is the default or not, but that is what I have here.

Turn either the track mute envelop or the item mute envelop on.
Make a time selection.
Ctrl+Shift+Left drag on the envelope segment mutes.
