Default Icon theme update...

just about finished with this collection... still have to clean a few gifs and then will post soon as the transparency's are fixed...

decided to have another look at simplifying the channel display keeping it as simple as possible plus a minor change to the record button

Hey akoustic,

The updated set looks really nice. I was wondering, which color theme are you using in those screen captures? Is that part of the collection you're putting together, or is it included in Reaper?

Thanks!

hi,

theme started out by changing the individual colours in the "appearance > colour theme settings" till i found a combination that was easy on the eyes... & then Justin went and opened up the GUI, making the icons editable which is super cool... its not in the preset theme pack but i will be posting the files pretty soon which you simply place in the appropriate folders.

cheers

I have to say I'm starting to really like the look of that. it's not only good looking but sensibly functional - not a whole lot of guesswork involved to work out what's what.

Very nice work!

We're not far from people complaining about REAPER's somewhat too sophisticated looks

- here are the theme sets as promised...

I put together an additional set to use with lighter theme colours which should make tweekin' these easier. I worked on the key elements so you may need to adjust the envelope/pan/etc colours as i just filled in arbitary values for those.

extract the .rar and drop em into your "Color Themes" folder... hope you enjoy them

Thanks for the good work, akoustic. And might it be an idea to turn your avatar into a full size poster or wallpaper? [edit: but now the reaper has left the beach!?]

I vote for for the Akoustic Day theme to become REAPER's default theme. It has a lot of class, just like REAPER itself
I only had to create some difference between the odd/even track backgrounds in the great theme - as necessary for the MIDI editor.

Downloaded it, and it does look very professionally done, but either my eyes are not up to it or my monitor is crap (or both) - but these smaller-marked icons (in this and other recent themes) make me have to peer too closely trying to make them out, and I'm not sure that new users would cope. I know if I showed this to my trainees, they'd react against it compared with the present default. Great to have it in the optional set, though!

For me,https://stash.reaper.fm/oldsb/1157533...%20set%20a.PNG has the most potential so far - clear but sexy. However, there's no accounting for taste....

just a minor update...

record mode buttons slipped through the radar and only noticed this while trying to check on the lane background... so, 2 new buttons per theme (the forgotten ones) & a lighter lane background on the bright theme - thanks Alex.

didnt post new files but rather updated the links (above) with the new sets... you may need to grab those again if you already downloaded & want the new record mode buttons

cheers,
Raoul

Didn't know that (free) software! Looks good. Let's give a link for everyone who wants to try his own icon luck:

Great work akoustic. Any plans for redoing the fader art work

The Gimp is a bit strange, made some icons on linux with it, transfered them to windows where the win-gimp refuses to read them , WTF?

But no disrespect to the Gimp, it's great. Everyone grap a copy!

Great themes Akoustic! The only thing I'd change is to have a bit more contrast between the "on" and "off" states in the Transport buttons. "Akoustic Night" is my new default theme.

I'm using "Acoustic Night" too, and already my productions sound better

To make the transport icons bolder, I copied the default transport icons into the akoustic_night_ui folder... and that looks pretty good, too!

Nice.

I'd call that "Ikea Frosted Glass 1.0"...

IMO you should commit to either just characters or just pictograms on the routing/fx buttons, make either larger. Characters would be my preference I think.

I'd also like a little more saturation of the deactivated buttons, so that on the tracks that aren't selected it's visually easier to differentiate what is a button from the background itself in your peripheral vision.

I used the same blue for my meters, I think that looks progressive - green is old school IMO. Although, I'd prefer more garish/florescent colors for the transport, to be able to easily visually locate it on the screen; the original revision "fuzzy glowing" buttons I may still prefer for the transport, since conceptually it's functionality is apart from the rest of the GUI. I like the transport section very defined - less desaturated, to set it off from the rest...?

The position cursor should be brighter IMO as well for the same reason - it's the most important thing on the screen, so I'd want to be able to have it grab my attention more.

Very professional and clean, graphically consistent - and no longer looks 20th century.... Reaper default, IMO....

chip,

thanks for the detailed observations... i've tried a few ideas out along those lines but decided to spend this weekend checking out Reapers functionality, which will hopefully give me a feel for the appropriate updates to the icons as well.

dig some of your comments... a little more saturation on the channels should work if i switch to characters... changed the record button and updated the media peak colour to be a little lighter as i found the loop points were sometimes masked by the wave peaks... but still messing with that here

I guess the key is getting a good balance of functional colour...
easy said than done though.. not everyone likes jazz but at least with a few icon sets, Reaper will be looking on par with the rest

- i would love 2 see Samplitudes comparisonics colours.. very helpful for x-fade edits

Actually Akoustic, after trying your icons out I prefer them with my color scheme. <g> It was too washed out/monochrome; I couldn't deal with visually locating objects because there wasn't enough definition. But of course that would follow, since I prefered my colors in the first place <g>. Duhr.. BUT - I'm quite satisfied with the look of the GUI now.

EXCEPT...

I can't grab the track-demarcation-borders when each track is minimized down to what I would guesstimate is the "3rd to smallest and smaller" size.. I have to grab a little teeny tiny dot...?

Are you the "chip" in chip retina massage v3?? That's one of my favourites. (along with Akoustic's)

Right now I'm looking at retinal massage v3, but with SpaceDyeVest's buttons. And liking that, too.

Still to try - Alex Z's stripe transport buttons.

I have a question - how does one change the colour of the play cursor? I can't find it in the Color Theme prefs...

The play cursor is an icon (.ico) file, say a very little image. You can only change its color after editing it in an image/icon editor; there's no color code for it in REAPER.

The play cursor is drawn using the fast windows XOR drawing, so you can't configure it..
