Question about proper track routing when using parallel on vocals
Below is an explanation of what's happening and my question is at the very bottom:
I was just watching a video by Kenny Gioia about Parallel processing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uznFOBJzOvs
I am using it on a vocal track. Here is my original track layout/routing:
1. Vox
2. Delay
3. Reverb
4. Sub Vocal
At the moment, the routing is like this:
Vox - Send to each Delay & Reverb
Delay - Send to Sub Vocal
Reverb - Send to Sub Vocal
In Kenny's video he introduces 2 new tracks,
1. Compressor
2. EQ & Compressor
Per Kenny's video, what I did was:
Vox - Send to Compressor &
Vox - Send to EQ & Compressor
I decided to add a track I am call Vox BUSS
I understand that I will be doing a:
Vox BUSS - send to Delay
Vox BUSS - Send to Reverb
QUESTION:
for the VOX BUSS, do I send all three Vox, Compressor & EQ & Compressor tracks?

OOps.... I forgot to include which tracks should be MASTER sends....
I'd appreciate confirmation of that too!
Thanks so much!

You can if you like. I'd put the EQ and Compressor as inserts on the Bus

If I'm understanding you correctly Steven, you want to use the compression in the parallel mode on your vocals?

2. EQ & Compressor
Per Kenny's video, what I did was:
Vox - Send to Compressor &
Vox - Send to EQ & Compressor

First of all I need to ask, why do you want 1 compressor and then another compressor with EQ? I recommend that you only
use the one compressor with no EQ. You've already got EQ on your vocals, so let's assume just one compressor.
This could be a little tricky with the way you have things setup now. Also I'm assuming you have the setup I gave you,
or have you got something else? I think this is the one I gave you?
There are a couple of ways to do this but let's just do the simplest one which would be to send the parallel compression
bus to the Sub Vocal bus.
The tricky part of this is that you will have to change the routing for the "Reverb" and "Delay". Also instead of sending
each vocal track to the Reverb and Delay, you'll need to send just the Sub Vocal track to the Reverb and Delay.
First add a buss and place it along side the Sub Vocal track and call it "Paral Comp" or what every you want. Then on each
of your vocal tracks, add another send to the "Paral Comp" bus. Basically your routing should be something like this.
Vocal tracks -> Paral Comp / Sub Vocal
Paral Comp -> Sub Vocal
Sub Vocal -> Sub Mast / Reverb & Delay buses
Reverb & Delay -> Sub Mast
What this accomplishes is that both the vocals and the parallel compression are getting to the Reverb and Delay at the
appropriate levels.
Let me know if you understand me Steven.

Hey, Tod:
Thanks for your support. And, yes, I am still using the layout you set up for me.
First, regarding the extra track with the EQ/Compression/EQ, I only did that because Kenny demonstrated it in his video and said it could be used on vocals, so I thought, “What the hell, let me try it and see what happens”.
If you look at my original post of this thread you will see a link to KennyÂ’s video.
If you go to time stamp 9:20 in the video is where he starts talking about this other track that has the RQ/Compression/EQ in addition to the first EQ track.
So, based on your information here combined with KennyÂ’s example, I think I have it right and here it is:
NOTE: I decided to have the MASTER track in the center. Also, since I want the Vox track at the TOP of the TCP display, is another reason the tracks are in this order:
1.BV 3 (Backup Vocal) (Master Send) Send to tracks 5,6,9
2.BV 2 (Backup Vocal) (Master Send) Send to tracks 5,6,9
3.BV 1 (Backup Vocal) (Master Send) Send to tracks 5,6,9
4.Lead Vocal (Backup Vocal) (Master Send) Send to tracks 5,6,9
5.Parallel Compression (ReaEQ) (Master Send) Send to track 9
6.Parallel EQ/Compression/EQ (Optional-I can remove!) (Master Send) Send to track 9
7.Delay (ReaDelay) (Master Send) Send to track 14
8.Reverb (MTurboReverb by Melda Productions) (Master Send) Send to track 14
9.Sub Vocal (NO Master Send) Send to tracks 7,8,14
10.Spacer Track (Cosmetic Purposes only)
11.MASTER
12.Spacer Track (Cosmetic Purposes only)
13.Mast Fx (NO Master Send) Send to track 11
14.Sub Mast (NO Master Send) Send to track 13
15.Instruments (NO Master Send) Send to track 14
Any additional tracks are related to instruments of the songÂ…..
Once again, as far as track 6 goes, I just did it cuz it's in the video.....
Please let me know if I have it right ......

OK, I understand. A lot of what I'm doing is just trying different things to see how it might help me as well as putting into practice what I'm learning, especially from Kenny Gioia (Thanks Kenny!)
BTW, Kenny, if you have not already, can you please make a video that explain the use and reason for the MASTER send?
I've seen a few threads here on this forum, but, I am a visual learner and when I can see it in a video I am 1,000 times better off!
In the meantime, I'm gonna keep singing!

Morning Steven,
Your routing looks good except what for the "Master send", which I assume is the little check box at the top left corner of the routing window on each track. Only one track should have the "Master send" checked and that is "Master" on track 11.
The "Master send", located in the routing for each track, goes to Reaper's "MASTER". Reaper's "MASTER" is the final track that goes to your interface. Basically think of it as the end track, or last track in the project.
Now it might be confusing having 2 Masters, but there is a reason for the Master I added to the mixing chain. It's there in the advent that you might want to use reference material.
I don't want to confuse you any more then you are, so just remember, the only track that should have the "Master send" checked is the "Master" track that I created.
Does this make sense to you?

Hi Steven, yes that's the "Master send" which will send that track to Reaper's main "MASTER" track.
When using a mixing/mastering chain that I gave you, the only track you want the "Master send" checked is the "Master" track that I created.
