Default Help with Actions...

Ok, so I've been using REAPER since about 2010, so I'm not a Newbie. But I never used scripts or actions. I've managed without them just fine.

But now, I want to start exploring the world of actions and see how it will help my very simple work flow.

For starters the 2 simple actions I'm trying to create are:

Split at cursor> Delete item that is right of cursor.

Split at cursor> Delete item that is left of cursor.

I have a feeling those might be the 2 first actions most people create, and I'm sure it's very simple. But I tried to do it myself and wasn't able to.

If someone can walk me through how to create this, I'd very much appreciate it.

So, I'm getting there.

I found the action for "Split-select left" and "Split-select right". I just need to add "delete selected item".

My problem is that I simply don't know how to combine 2 actions into one. I know, it's probably the simplest thing.

While waiting for answers here, I'll check the manual, but I prefer talking to hoo-mans.

Starting to get it.

Found "NEW action". From there, it's just drag and drop.

I'll leave these posts up in case someone else new to Actions comes along. Hopefully this thread will help.

LOL! You know how it is when you discover something new? I can't stop creating actions now. Like a new toy.

Ironically, in another thread just a few days a go, I was telling someone how content I was not using actions, scripts, etc...

I'm glad I kept an open mind because I think this is gong to save me hours of work overall.

Except... you have!

All the menu (or otherwise) commands available in Reaper (or by 3rd party) are called "actions". The ones put into the menus by default are just the default ones the Reaper devs decided to plunk down into the menus on day 1. (Probably to keep the default menus from needing scroll bars!)

You actually don't need custom actions for those functions

Item: Trim items left of cursor

Item: Trim items right of cursor

Although, I do actually use a custom action to slightly modify the behavior of the trim actions

Custom: custom trim left
Item: Trim items left of cursor
Item navigation: Move cursor to start of items
View: Go to edit cursor

which just fixes the view for when I'm ripple editing a long clip.

For my own workflow I've found it fastest to have the "A" key for trim left, and when I want to trim right I press "S" (split items), then "X" (Cut items).

Yup! You got me! I have to thank you. If it wasn't for our conversation, I wouldn't have had that seed planted in my head. Thanx, man. Seriously.

You're probably right, but I meant I never used keyboard short cuts, combination actions, assigned custom actions, etc...

Exactly.

Ah, I didn't know that. I wasn't sure what "trim" actually meant. So I didn't think it was the same thing I was looking for. Thanx for that.
