Default Reaper and Steinberg UR 242....is that working?

Hi @ all,

a newbie want to know....is anyone here using a Steinberg UR242 as Audio Interface on a linux machine? How stable (if at all) is this combination? Thanks for a quick info.

The "class compliant mode" means that it should work with Linux and, indeed, I was able to use my UR44 successfully in that mode. Using Jack, I was able to use only 2 of the 6 inputs, but with ALSA, I was able to access all 6.

What remains to be seen is whether there is some way to get the dspMixFX to work. That is a Windows or Mac based app, so it might work with WINE, though I did not test that.

Depending on your intended usage, the dspMixFX may, or may not, be important to you.

In CC mode, my UR44 works fine (6 inputs and 4 outputs),
very stable with sessions of many hours,
so the UR242 should works too.

No, the steinberg authorisation system is aweful,
and if needed, I make the configuration with OSX
( I put the phone 2 outputs on mix 2, outputs 3 and 4 of the cards), then restart on Linux and the card keeps the last configuration.
For total control of the card without propietary OS,
Steinberg's soundcards are not the best choices.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I figured. I was hoping that someone might get the dsp stuff to work as I find it very useful.

Maybe it's possible to use DSPMix with Wine and WineAsio,
but I didn't try. I hope you'll find someone who can tells you.
You may take a look at linuxmusician.com

....so, I'll take a UR44 and send my UR242 back to the musicstore, where I bought it.... It wasn't new (as described), so changing shouldn't be a big problem. So far....thanks for answering my question.

AVID and Steinberg Audiodevices, used in "thirdparty" DAW's, is looking for trouble in my (mac) experience.

Some people will totally disagree.
Well, in my opinion, they are just lucky then

My Steinberg UR44 also works in CC mode, but strangely, when I disarm track recording, the mic in input one is off in the channel and in the speakers, but the mic in input 2 is off in the channel but live in the speakers. This is something that I would go into the software mixer to fix, but the mixer is unavailable in Linux.

Steinberg UR44 works here in CC mode on CentOS7 + kernel-lt 4.4.19x from elrepo (I followed the steps from https://arrfab.net/posts/2017/Jan/05...-centos-7-daw/). I use qjackctl, audacious, audacity and reaper. I record from microphones and bass guitars. It simply works, but my usage is simple.

The only thing I can't get to work in Linux is the OUTPUT knob what doesn't control any output volume (or would it for the main output??), but I don't care since I send the 1&2 LINE output of the UR44 to an external Mackie Big Knob that does the work anyway (and much more).
Any hint here would be appreciated!

After I could see it works for my use in Linux, I went to update the firmware from within Windows, checked what the proprietary software allows to do to the mixer (nothing of interest to me) and finally registered the device at steinberg website.
