Default Getting a good (Metal!) guitar sound etc

Hi Folks,
I've been playing with JSC for a couple of hours and it's a great effects tool - I had a couple of queries that other users might have encountered already. Firstly - effects chaining is this in order of higest number through to lowest number in the list of enabled effects?

Secondly - has anybody got tips on getting a good guitar sound - it's a tall order to be able to emulate something line a line 6 pod but ultimately that's what I'd like to do with this. I've tried the built in amp models (and the POD XT models from http://noisevault.com/index.php?page...le&file_id=124) but I'm a bit lost when it comes to shaping the sound to get a decent metal tone out (without being too fizzy and thick sounding) I suspect thats an eq/tone problem but I'm not sure - basically I'm looking to create the Pantera 'Broken' tone - no mean feat on any effects gadget! Obviously, subjective approximation is easy (just turn everything up!) but getting close to the tone you want is a lot harder. Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that the effects go from lowest to highest. I tend to stick a noise gate as number 1, and amp model as the last (Or next to last if I've got a drum synth running)

Ah, Noise gate, thats a good point - I'd forgotten to even check if that was available..

Can a specific combination of effects/settings be saved as one downloadable/installable patch? If so, does anyone have any good guitar setups they would like to share?

Yes, you can save a preset.. once you have it saved, you can use the Jesusonic package creator (at least on windows) to make a package of it, optionally including the effects it depends on.

Wou can save effects lists by hitting 'S' on the main screen. And you can then load it with 'L'.

If you want my current setup, check to see if you've got a Presets/A directory, and copy the following into a file called "00" You should then be able to load it with 'L' (if it's saying Preset Bank B, or C, or anythign else, you can use f11/f12 to move back and forwards between the sets)

Code:
#Simple Metal
0:1:0:Misc/noisegate
-55 70 10 500 - - - -
0:0:0:Guitar/distortion
14 4 -18 2 - - - -
0:0:0:Meters/vumeter
-53.862632 -53.686235 200 - - - - -
0:0:0:Guitar/amp-model
Marshall|JCM800|-|Matchless|Chieftain.wav -17 1 0 166 512 - -
0:0:0:Synthesis/drumseq-human
120 -5 patchset_pacific1_adpcm.wav track.txt 1 16 0 -
0:0:0:Utility/bypasstoggletrigger
1 2 2 - - - - -
0:0:0:Utility/bypasstoggletrigger
2 5 5 - - - - -
You may need to fiddle with the volume/preamp values to get it to sound okay on your system.
You can also turn on/off the distortion/drum sounds with '1' and '2'

Thanks for the tips - I've tried your patch, all I'm managing to get is a fuzzy heavy blues style distortion - I've upped my line in/mic in level in case it was the signal that was too low but that just overloads the soundcard and breaks the sound up. I've upped/downed the preamp/volume levels and I can get to the muddy light distotion level without a problem. It's a mid-scooped ultra high gain sound that I'm trying to nail though and I'm having trouble finding it.

If it was a POD II I'd select Moden Hi-Gain and hold tap to select a clear sounding 4x10 cabinet, then just put drive all the way up and turn middle down a bit. Maybe I need a different/higher gain distortion effect?

ACtually, after playing a bit more and editing the distortion effect so that the gain goes up to 256 (I have not idea what I'm doing), then playing with different amp models I can get a pretty good approximation of what I'm looking for, no definition to it whatsoever though (sounds like I've broke my virtual speaker cone!) - so single note pedal note stuff sounds really fuzzy still, hmm - I'm getting closer but not quite there yet.. perhaps the distortion I'm thinking of doesn't apply gain equally to bass frequencies as it does to mid/high?

Default Parametric-EQ

Try adding the parametric-eq from the Filter folder and just play artound til you get what you like. For Dimebag you need to boost at around 80 or 90 hz with a large width and scoop out at around 1.5khz the width should not be as large as the bass width. Then flatten out the highend at around 4khz.

Thanks for that. My distortion still sounds broken though - with distortion off and preamp for the amp model turned up a bit every thing is good and mildly chrunchy in a bluesy way. switch distortion on and I get huge amounts of background noise and low muted noted sound like interference, hum and crackle instead of a good sharp solid 'chunk' sound. High notes (solo's etc) are slightly better but still suffer from excessive noise. My theory is still that the distortion needs to be more choosy about where in the audio spectrum it applies gain, not that i know anything about such things obviously.. but having a theory is always a good place to start!

After checking out your website and listening to some of your music, which I found quite enjoyable, I noticed you are using the audigy soundcard. I just wanted to ask if you are pluging in through the front panel mic in and and if the preamp for that is on?

A good point again (I've read justin's comments on impedance and pickup load etc in the other forum), I'm plugging straight into the line in 1/mic input in on the external box, I've played around with the mix preamp level and on/off to see if I was overloading the input or not loading it quite enough but if I turn the preamp right down then I'm back to a bluesy rock sound, if I turn the mic level up the distortion/overdrive sound good but the overall quality of the sound is as described above.

Hmm, can get a reasonable 'metal' sound now by going through my Line 6 Pod with everything Bypassed so maybe it was is a line level problem. A combination of using just enough distortion and lots of parametric eq in different places. I'm still not anywhere near the sound I was hoping for but that's just because you need to be an eq whizz (is there a way to programmatically plug a GUI ontop of jesusonic? - wrong forum, I know..), I reckon the rough-nasally tone of something like Lamb of God's 'Ruin' is in there somewhere though... getting it genuinely pantera-esque could be a bit more tricky..

Still a bit noisy but getting some usable sounds by adding an amp model, then the distortion, then another amp model. The choice of second amp model in the chain makes a huge difference to the sound, without it a normal distortion to amp model effects chain doesn't really overdrive enough. I'm using the POD XT Jesusonic amp models

.. And yes, the riff is very badly played, especially the second half, just noodling..

anyone up for writing a 'live metal drummer simulator' for JSC?

Default I've uploaded some presets w/ Dimebag IR's

You might be intrested in these IR's they are from a close approximation of his set up and equalization just pop in and grind it up also have a very scooped sound preset pending with the DIRAC test tone so you can create your own IR's.

I haven't yet tried the distortion on the JesuSonic, but I generally find digital distortion and preamps to fall flat of getting a truly satisfying tone. Not saying it can't be done, hell, I have a hard enough time finding the tone I want with analog gear! But keep trying.

Another thing, when EQing it, start flat, and work from there. I find if I make assumptions about the EQ curve (like tweaking it before listening) I have a MUCH harder time getting a good sound. And alter one band at a time, playing with it for a while. Get to know each band intimately
