Default Should I turn off Windows 10 updates?

Ok, now that everything is working fine here on windows 10 (except there are some minor problems) I am currious if I should turn of windows 10 updates ----- because - who knows there could be a update which would bring mess into my system.

what do you think guys?

Windows updates are far less likely to mess up anything than updating REAPER for example.

I am interested to know your reasoning for that.

Windows is tested software running hundreds of millions computers worldwide. REAPER is only tested randomly by a few users, and updates to it frequently introduce new bugs. Rarely showstoppers, the app will run, but various things that mess up your workflow.

I've never had a Windows update cause a single issue since my first DAW on W2K, while both OSX and Ubuntu updates have caused minor and serious disasters on various work and personal machines.

I don't think MS is a particularly great software house, a lot of the stuff they put out blatantly sucks, but considering the volume they are dealing with, their OS update track record is spectacular.

I prefer to keep getting them for security reasons. Most workaround style malware is usually patched once it becomes popular, but still linger because the designers know that a lot of people will be slow or completely ignorant of updates. This is the target user.

I do like to know a bit more about what exactly they are updating and they obfuscate that a lot, making you travel through a bunch of web pages rather than just displaying it on the update notification, and that annoys me, but it's still worth it.

Now if they'd just fix the decade old bugs and oversights...

Agreed.

Never had a Windows update that messed up the DAW audio. However the Win 10 anniversary update did reset some settings on my soundcard.
Some of the Reaper updates have messed up existing projects.

(Win 7) I've been suspicious of MS updates ever since they snuck in the Win 10 popups, and all the other registry stuff that couldn't be deleted or turned off.

My answer is use the GWX Control Panel, and use the updates that come AFTER doing so.
That way, you're sure to avoid any nasty surprises, and also get the security you need.

if your system works great and it is not connected to Internet, then you could perfectly disable updates. One service less in the background is always a good idea. You can always manually activate the updates once in a while if you want. But certainly not needed to be always on.
But if you are connected to Internet, you want to always have the latest updates for security, I guess.

Those who have had no issues with Windows updates... You are lucky ones!

I work in company IT dep and we have around 3000 computers... We have 1-3 windows updates in year what causes some issues (minor and major) on computers.
Not in all computers but in some with some specific software or hardware.

But anyway do not stop updating your Windows if you ever connect it to Internet.
If you are running it isolated environment you do not need to update it if everything works... Just always take backups!
(Your computer can still be infected by virus, even it is not connected to Internet via USB drive etc.)
