Not sure I understand, but using Reaper Actions, SWS Extension and ReaPack, there should be a few possibilities,
For example, create new custom action, try these 2 actions,...

Script: mpl_Select items named as selected item.lua
Take: Set active take to one random color

Meanwhile I did kinda a crutch sws action to that one)
But unfortunately it works in two steps and delete item name and note.

I'd like to in one click but don't know how to return on first selected item.

Have anyone some ideas?)
