Default Midi recording/editing question insert blank midi item shortcut

Although I have been using Reaper on/off for audio recording/mixing for almost 10 years now (wow!), when it comes to midi, I am quite a newbie. Just wanted some insights on the best way to achieve the following.

1. For inserting midi items (blank), what are some of the shortcuts you are using to do this? In Ableton I'm somewhat used to double clicking a Session slot to create a blank 1 bar midi item.

Many ways to do this.
Easiest might be to hold CTRL and use your mouse to define a new midi clip. If you have Snap on, then it will match exactly to your measure boundaries.
