Newbie testing linux
Hi, I wanna make the jump to Linux because death to Microsoft and Linux looks cool.
I’ve read that my laptop (Samsung Chronos7) has some issues like trackpad not working and graphics card driver not working. There are some solutions that I’d like to try before committing. Can I try these solutions if I do an install from a USB drive? Can I test my interface to see how it works with REAPER from the USB drive? I wanna know how it goes before I eradicate W10 from my life but I’m not sure if doing the USB boot will allow me to fully test my PC. Thanks! |

If you download an image file and create a DVD, you should be able to boot from it and see how Linux runs on your hardware before installing it by selecting "Try" rather than "Install".
You can also make bootable USB flash media, but it's a bit more involved in creating it and getting your machine to boot from it. |

Normally on so called live media, you can boot, install, configure, but you lose the changes when you shutdown.

Try creating a bootable USB drive with Rufus and make sure to choose the persistent mode to keep the changes you are doing. AFAIK there should be no difference in terms of testing compatibility either from the Live USB drive or a proper installation on your hard drive. I am doing the same here with my laptop since I can't get rid of Windows yet. I could even get my RME interface running under class compliant mode.

I just used Ubuntu 20.04 with my RME Babyface in class compliant mode (check the manual). It is the old Babyface, not the Pro. It was very easy to select as a main audio input and output.

Thanks everyone. I tried booting from a USB (Manjaro) and everything works great, better than Windose...
My Focusrite iTrack Solo works flawlessly with REAPER. I’ll try AV Linux MX and do a proper install over the weekend. |

I will yet again give Linux a try , only this time with Ubuntu 20.4, as you recommended. I only have an early i3 laptop available for it right now, but hopefully that and the Babyface will get me up & running. Been years since I used Unix & I never really managed to spend enough time on Linux to "get" it.
