'Freeze' function just doesn't work

Hi, can anybody help with this problem ?
Nothing happens when i try to use the 'Freeze' function in Reaper even though it works fine when rendering a track or a whole project ! I get no message explaining why it won't freeze so i was wondering if it's something that needs to put right in the settings. Any help would be much appreciated !

Do you mean the "Render/Freeze Tracks" option when you right-click on a track?

Yeah that's right ! Basically i have no problems when i click on 'Render/Freeze tracks' and choose one of the 3 render options (the track renders straight away) but if i choose any of the 3 options to freeze tracks it simply does nothing as if something is blocking the action. The only thing that does happen is that the ASIO4ALL dialogue box appears and then disappears ! Can't see that being an issue though !

In Options, Preferences, Rendering try ticking the "When freezing, render the entire track..." option

Also can you try a different audio config - e.g. Wave Out, WASAPI - and see if it works then...

just tried both of your suggestions UNCLESWEDE but nothing seems to work, downloaded Reaper to my laptop which is set up to use 'WAVE OUT' for sounds, i don't even have ASIO set up on the laptop so maybe that rules that out at least. Still no joy though !

OK.

Can you do a portable install of Reaper (choose Portable install during the setup and pick a folder - default C:\Reaper) then load an affected project and see if it still isn't working?

If it does work, then there's something in the config of your main reaper install that is causing the issue.

Ohh... I guess you've effectively done that already with the laptop install (assuming you didn't import your main Reaper config).

I'm a bit stuck now...

Anyone else have any ideas?

Hi. I've just done the portable install again but it makes no difference i'm afraid. I wonder if i've inadvertently switched a preference somewhere. Is there anywhere i can check the individual stock preference for reaper to see if i can revert back to the original preferences. Thanks for your help by the way 'Uncleswede', much appreciated

A portable install ought to do that, but if in doubt rename reaper.ini to something else (rename, like that you have a backup of it).

Is it project-specific? That is, if you create a brand new project, insert a track, drag any old audio clip onto it then freeze it, does that work?

What are you trying to freeze?

MIDI with VSTi? Audio track with FXs on the insert?

Freeze won’t work if there’s nothing to freeze.

You're probably not but...

Are you freezing an external analog synth via say "reainsert"?

If so, there's an option somewhere to render in realtime as without that this won't work.

The freeze function doesn't work on any of my projects. i.ve deleted reaper and reinstalled it but no joy. Most of my projects consist of roughly 10 to 15 tracks per project, mainly just me playing Rhythm Guitar, Lead Guitar and Bass with just a few VST effects on each track ! Thanks for any help !

What is your OS? If Vista+, then use WASAPI instead of ASIO4ALL.
I suppose you have the issue with your audio device.

TLDR but.... Any type of rendering/freeze et al should require zero use of the sound card, in fact rendering usually takes the sound card completely offline during the render process.

Did a factory reset of Reaper today and everything has gone back to there original settings, unfortunately nothing has changed as far as the 'Freeze' function still doesn't work 1 I GIVE UP !!!!!!!!

replaced the VST 'FREQUALIZER' which i was using on lots of my tracks with the stock Reaper EQ 'ReaEQ'! PROBLEM SOLVED !! The Freeze function is up and running again. I suppose it may be caused by more VSTs than the one i was using and its a shame because i liked the 'FREQUALIZER' EQ ! Hope this helps anyone with the same issue in the future
