Default HOW DO I? - Clarification of when to apply compression

I've been watching lots of YouTube videos.

The two I am focused on for this question are one video show how to slice up a track in some cases down to single word that are sung, etc ......... and the other about applying compression.

I understand both, but I was just curious which to do first?

Not sure why you're slicing up the track - but think it could be volume automation? This would be to tame loud phrases and bring up softer ones. If this is so, it can also be done with volume automation on the track envelope. See this video - but make sure this volume envelope is pre FX and do that task first. The compressor can be added after if necessary and will have less work to do.

Hope this helps!
