Default Midi frustration with Reaper

In Sonar (which I last opened more than a year ago since switching to Reaper) I can record any midi data (like buttons on a controller keyboard, not necessarily notes), and then immediately see what cc is being recorded, in the Sonar events viewer.

In Reaper, it seems that I have to step through every one of the midi cc items before I can identify what was recorded.

Is there not a better way of doing the same thing in Reaper? IS the piano roll view really the only way of seeing not-notes midi data?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I guess you could use the MIDI monitor in ReaControlMIDI perhaps?

Default events list view

Or use the events list view in the midi editor instead of the piano roll?

(grin)

As a Sonar user from way back, I did find this rather funny....

"How can I look at MIDI stuff I recorded like I did in Sonars MIDI event list editor?"

But then I remembered how it drove me nuts after umpteen years of Sonar that Reaper often called things a slightly different or in some cases a VERY different name.

You say Tomayto I say Tomahto.....

If you didnt already find it there is a very good post expressly aimed at helping Sonar users adapt to Reaper, including a glossary - Just wish I could remember where it is on here.

If you use the editor window you can add as many CC control lanes as you like (velocity, expression, mod wheel). There's a little plus sign in the left to add more lanes.

this is one of a couple reasons i don't record ccs in reaper unless they are recorded into their own midi item that can be easily edited from the main screen.

this has driven me further and further into reaper's automation system via mouse instead, and i've enjoyed it. but haven't quite managed to record automation via midi controller as cleanly/smoothly as I could record midi directly.

Thanks Darkstar, your answer has helped. That 2012 thread on how to make used cc's more obvious was good.

The problem with cc in Reaper is that you have to go hunting for them. In other DAWS they are always visible, there isn't a separate lane for every cc.

fwiw, I still find Reaper's MIDI handling difficult - compared to Sonar. And I'm not the only one who feels that MIDI in Reaper has to improve - the DEVS aren't doing enough to bring this on a level that other DAWS have. I only know Sonar well, and it does MIDI editing better. But that's all it does better, the rest sucks.
