Default Reascript: Project Markers:groups,show,hide

I need some high level advice from more experienced reascripters:

I need to create some functionality: I need region 'Groups', and then the ability to show and hide region groups and individual regions from the timeline. In other words, I have a LOT of regions that are overlapping, and its really messy to deal with while I work; so I'd like to create some buttons that "show/hide" region groups as needed.

To my knowledge, this is not supported in any way in vanilla or extended reaper.

My inclination is to write/read markers from disk (deleting and recreating), and use region color as the group id. (I want this to be very seemless - and not go through any save menus as you'd see in the marker view > Export Import, etc). Alternatively I was thinking of storing markers in the RPP but am thinking a txt in the audio folder might be better.

Will this work? Any advice?

Best already working way of doing that is using heda Region and markers from item background script. it is a nice way to have groups, auto color etc, being able to hide/show etc
