Default No MIDI activity or snd Reaper 5 trial

I am a Reaper neebie trying version 5.
Read the full instructions twice and Terry E Well M116 step by step guide to no avail. Clearly, I must be intepreting wrong or skipping a crucial Reaper MIDI configuration. No VU activity or sound on MIDI files playback

Plain Audio projects record and play back ok in Reaper.

Have Windows 10 v1809. Proteus Vx plays perfectly standalone.
Sonar Home Studio 6 works perfectly with all MIDI files (oldie but goodie) and plays PVx Composer and Virtuso... a delight.

MIDI files load ok in Reaper, show in tracks and in Master etc.
Transport works, but on playback of the loaded MIDI tracks there is no VU meter activity and no sound anywhere. Tried Direct Sound and MS Wavetable per recommendation but still no VU activity or sound.

After many years of MIDI music I have hit a wall.

Would appreciate any help that resolves this problem.

Thanks

Welcome to the Reaper Forums!

In case you haven't already found them, make sure to check out the User Guide (https://www.reaper.fm/userguide.php) and Videos section (https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php) in general. Lots of useful info there for getting started.

Do you have a plugin loaded on the MIDI Tracks in order to generate audio from the MIDI?

For testing purposes, you can also try if using ReaSynth on the MIDI tracks works: https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#BvSC-6qq1vs

Welcome to the forums! I rather suspect Solger has it.

Many Many newcomers to reaper with experience of other DAW software assume that a virtual instrument will just be "there" to play their MIDI files.

Reaper has very little in the way of Virtual Instrument plugins included, so if this IS your problem, it would be worth reading the Going all freeware (well almost) thread on here. Contained in it and internet sites like bedroomproducersblog are a huge selection of free plugins, including a lot of formerly commercial ones like the excellent MTPowerdrums2, which is as good as an awful lot of the expensive ounes on the market.

Hopefully this will fix things for you,but just in case, here`s a couple of other suggestions. Make surte you actually HAVE MIDI activity in the tracks where you have inserted a vstI. This shows as a thin red line in the track meter if you actually have MIDI activity, but you wont see any activity in the main part of the meter if your VSTi is not connected in properly and record monitoring set to either auto or off to hear playback, auto or ON to hear what you are actually playing in.

I would also like to see what you are using for an Audio/MIDI interface & how you have it set. The more info you can give us the quicker we will find what is going on.

P.S. The Kenny Gioia video tutorials really are excellent, especially helping on setup.
