Default Track EQ Controls

Hey guys - been using Reaper for a year now (love it!) and spent the afternoon browsing the forums and Google to no avail on a Cubase-related question.

I work closely with a friend of mine who is a solid Cubase 4 man, and we're often swapping out tracks from my machines to his, which can be annoying as there's no direct project export - although i do understand why this won't be in the roadmap as its not priority (why can't we have a standard format like OpenDoc?).

I want to get rid of any Cubase dependence and focus totally on Reaper but there is only one thing that keeps me there - Cubase's on-board EQ controls for each track. When we have the mixer up there's no need to open up FX dialogs and we can directly adjust the dials right next to the track's levels for frequency cutting/boosting. It's just incredible handy and if i could do it in Reaper everything would be complete in terms of switchover.

Is there a current way (or plans in the future) to have on-board EQ for each track a la Cubase? I have a tonne of VSTs i can play with too (Waves, T-Racks, Izotope etc) and would appreciate recommendations as to which might be the best to use?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome Azcan!
For now you ned to open up the FX and choose your favorite EQ.
Mine is Gliss EQ.
I think they do it this way to keep things uncluttered.

Thank you

Unfortunately i don't have multiple monitors to make it easier but i can see the advantages of have FX windows open separately. Is Gliss the best one?

Or there's always, you know, ReaEQ.

See this thread on using Midi Learn,
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.p...ghlight=rotary

Add a simple 3 band EQ to each track like Loser 3bandEQ.

You can then set up any rotary controls like I have on my E-MU Xboard midi keyboard controller to operate the Frequency and Gain of each band and have it only active if required on the selected track or all off them.I think you only have to do this to one instance of the EQ you use and save as an FX chain and then you can load that to each track.

here is my solution:
insert a new track, insert the reaeq on that channel and set it to bypass. now click on "FX" (toolbar on the fx-chain window) and choose "save chain as default for new track"
now every time you insert a new track, your got your eq. and because it is bypassed, it won´t use cpu.
if you then need an eq on a channel, just turn off the bypass.

+1. I have ReaEQ on every track as a default.

There are plans (or there were plans) to have track EQ before version 3.
Dunno if it will be ala SX, but the idea was to have basic EQ without having to resort to FX.

I have not heard anything to the contrary so I am waiting (im)patiently.

Cheers,
David

Default An Idea

How about having direct control of any fx parameters in the mixer. In addition to using midi control for any parameter, we could control it from the mixer channel. Say you want a high pass filter on each channel. Open a channel and select the vst, set the high pass to 20k and have the frequency control selected to be assessable from the mixer as a nameable slider or dial the size of a regular send or fx. Then just set this as a preset. I know you wouldn't have visual feedback of the settings, buy this is not always needed.

+1 zappsunzorn - love the 'access various fx controls' - opens up a lot of possibilities

That idea, in general, has merit.

But specifically for EQ one control may not work...what do you control (Frequency, Q or Boost/Attenuation) and how do you pick what is controled...

Again, that is still a _very_ cool idea.

Regards,
David

Even just a simple 3 band parametric per channel for subtle use. We already have ReaEQ for the more precise eq needs, so maybe just a simple 3 band to boost or cut when a full blown eq plug is not needed.

Synapse' Orion has a more detailed eq per each mixer channel and I find myself not using it all as it sounds like mud. FL has a simple 3 band per channel that I used to always use for small tweaks that worked very nice when I didn't need to dial in a specific eq frequency(s).

Since some of the Reaper channel buttons already resemble those of a mixing console one could at least argue that a HP filter button with variable frequency would fit the concept nicely.

I remember someone talking about this at the live reaper support a while ago, so I am probably not the first to get this idea.

The Kristal Audio Engine has an OK 3 band Parametric EQ available with the push of a button. It appears in a small window, and it very un-obtrusive. Maybe something like this?

I'd rather leave Reaper as is and let me add what eq plug I choose to use...

I'd like a little button on the track in mixer view.. when you click it, it changes from being a slider with all the effects and things too being a couple band eq... would be sweet...
