So all this will do is make the audio mono by summing the channels together, but the plugin will still process internally in stereo, it wot reduce the cpu amount used.
If you're running out of CPU then freezing tracks is the best option.

Ive actually done many tests before posting here.
All Fab Filter Plugins, All Softube Plugins and countless many other VST3 plugins that I've tested, DO have been coded to alter their internal processing channel count. And forcing them to mono mode by manually Requesting Mono Mode DOES reduce the CPU usage by up to 50%.
