The Good Free Effect Plug-in Thread
Forgive me if this thread already exists, but it might be good to get a list of free plug-ins, especially good ones that you'd recommend to others.
Obviously there's the KVR database, filtered here for all free Windows effects.
There's a short list on this German site.
Digital Fish Phones has some good compressors.
Soundhack's +decimate is a good bit/sample reducer.
Who's got a good, low CPU rent brick wall limiter?

www.gersic.com have a great database of plugins - but you have to resist downloading ones you will never use!

A0 Hsitory Pack, Dx or VST

I'm not crazy about the Eq (although a lot of people like it), but I use the Tape Delay almost every day. The flanger is really good, too.

Working here!...sort of, actually Reaper seems to have a bit of a problem in general with limiters on the master out, and/or parent folder track, I couldn't figure out why, when I record armed a track, and played into the mic, I was getting crackles and distortion...(oh no what the....did I do now, this was working fine yesterday)... until I turned off Buzmaxi3, I swapped it for classic master limiter, and TLs, but same problem, simple work around, just turn off while recording, playback and render is unaffected....hmmm..I don't think Reaper likes having too many fx on the master out either...someone could prove me wrong though.
...phew...yawn....where's my coffee

I linked over to http://www.easytoolz.de/ and picked up their Moog Protege and Amphetamine VSTs for about $12 that went towards a humanitarian fund. I feel good about that, and got some dope little boxes to play with now. They seem to run great in REAPER.
Thanks for the link, Art Evans.
*The FREE demo versions offered are pretty solid (i.e. not totally defeatured). But the full versions are available at very low cost. (Just adding this since we are in a "FREE plugins" thread.)

This one is not free - but I'm so gobsmacked by the Rayspace reverb that I'm actually going to pay money for it, which isn't like me!! I've never heard a reverb which always sounds so natural and believable when used on acoustic music (well, unless you really stuff up the settings). Very well worth trying, and the interface is quite addictive - though you would be well advised to read through the short help file to get the best results. http://www.quikquak.com/ is the site.

I hadn't realized RaySpace was so inexpensive! I'll have to look into it, as I've heard nothing but GLOWING reviews from all corners.
Here's a pretty nice little multiband compressor (the guy calls it a "Dynamic Equaliser"). Sounds pretty good, and it does upward compression and downward expansion.

Here's something I've just come across - a CD I recorded way back - listen to a couple of these excerpts and you'll hear why at the end of the day there's no reverb like the real thing. I recorded it in a South London church using a single pair of mics via a preamp direct to DAT and it was edited and mastered with no eq or effects at all - those were the days!
http://www.emusic.com/album/10601/10601155.html has it. [Not a commercial plug as I have no further financial interest in this].

Cheers, I must have that one somewhere but forgot about it... I record all concerts with an MS pair (Sennheiser MKH series) and normally use a hardware MS mic preamp, but sometimes now use them straight into the Motu Traveler, and thus need a decoder for monitoring. Also that vst is handy for adding extra width and natural reverb to a stereo recording lacking 'life'.

SSL Listen-Back Compressor
Phase-Bug (for adjusting phase alignment, great for multi-mic'ed bass and guitar amps, also drums) hmm, can't find a link to it anymore...

The SSL LMC works well for parallel compression, but honestly, not much else.

My Plugs
Am I allowed to use this free plugin thread to plug my free plugins..? They could use a free plug.
I just uploaded a few things that might interest some of you. Have a look here...
http://asia.geocities.com/andywanders/
It's Geocities so sometimes it's a bit slow.
I just got hooked on REAPER too.

Sample Trigger
I just started using Jesusonic a few days ago and made this script, it's rather crude and samples need to be the same sample rate as project and they need to be stereo and not too long (though I had success with 4 second long samples!) here's the code, you can copy and paste as a new effect, make a directory in "data" folder and throw samples in. Also note changing samples during playback doesn't work too well. Again, rather crude, but it works and have used it in a few songs already (saved me from having to load up Logic to do this exact thing)...
desc: Simple Sample Trigger (mono)
slider1:/samples:none:Sample
slider2:-6<-30,0,0.5>threshold (db)
slider3:150<0,300,10>release time (ms)
@init
releaseCount = 0;
samplePos = 0;
@slider
thresh = 2 ^ (slider2/6);
releaseTime = slider3 * srate / 1000;
lastslider1 != (slider1|0) ? (
lastslider1=slider1|0;
filehandle = file_open(slider1);
sample_len = sample_nch = sample_srate = 0;
filehandle > 0 ? (
file_riff(filehandle, sample_nch, sample_srate);
sample_nch ? (
sample_len = file_avail(filehandle)/sample_nch;
file_mem(filehandle, sample, sample_len * sample_nch);
samplePos = sample_len;
);
file_close(filehandle);
);
);
@sample
overThresh = (abs(spl0) > thresh) || (abs(spl1) > thresh);
overThresh && !releasing ? (
samplePos = 0;
releaseCount = 0;
releasing = 1;
);
spl0 = sample[samplePos*2];
spl1 = sample[samplePos*2]; // how do we do stereo?
samplePos += 1;
(releaseCount += 1) > releaseTime ? releasing = 0;

Thanks for the tip. I tried Google but it took an age to upload then the links didn't work. So what I did was put the whole lot into one zip file (just over 6mb) and post it on Rapidshare. Here's the link...

Let me know what you think of 'em.

Camel Crusher
If anyone has posted this please delete... i did a search a few times and could not find anything on it....
http://www.camelaudio.com/camelcrusher.php
CamelCrusher is a free versatile 'colouring' multi-effect plugin. It offers two characteristically different distortion sounds which can be blended together to create a wide variety of tones and textures. Great for guitars, drums and plenty more!
There's also a warm, smooth analogue-style low-pass filter, with buckets of resonance. Assign a MIDI controller and start tweaking!
Finally, let's not forget the easiest-to-use compressor you'll find anywhere. It can 'phatten' up your sound as quickly as you can turn up the 'Amount' knob! Find out more in the manual
Best of all, CamelCrusher is available free of charge!
Camel Audio CamelCrusher is a freeware vst plugin multi effect, featuring distortion and compressor. It is one of many vst plugins available from Camel Audio
Feature highlights
# Two different distortion types.
# Warm, analogue-modelled resonant low-pass filter.
# High quality, easy-to-use compressor, with 'Phat' mode.
# Powerful 'MIDI Learn' function.
# A collection of useful Preset patches to get you started.
# Randomize for instant inspiration

Though not exactly a free plugin, there are some great free impulses at Noisevault which work really well in Reaverb.
Link...
http://noisevault.com/nv/index.php?o...tory&Itemid=29
I recommend the Kurzweil KSP8 and the Lexicon 960 for truly stunning reverbs.
Cheers

Very realistic sax
There's a very realistic sax VSTi at http://www.vstsax.com/ - you have to download the sound banks and the vsti itself, and check the readme for installation instructions.

My friend and I have collected several good plugins (instruments and effects) and hosted them on a server for our band website. Feel free to take a look here:
www.emptyseatsband.com/download.html
Many of the plugins listed in this thread are collected there, and I've got more on my PC that I haven't uploaded. Enjoy!
