I'm constantly having to go back to the menu bar to "paste"...

... what am I missing, why is "Cut" and "Copy" right click items, but not paste....???

v1.20 maybe? "Paste" seems to be available in the right-click menu for me ...

You need to be in the master track, the timeline at the top, or below the tracks, or otherwise not on top of an item. When you right click on an item you are getting and item-based context menu whereas pasting is track based.

So how do I comp edits to one track????

Say I've got 3 tracks, 1 of which I want to use as the "final" track;

I want to cut a portion from one of the other two tracks, and have that replace the same area on the "final" track...

What is easier than selecting the area, cutting it - and then pasting it to the final track? 3 steps.

Since I can't do mix-paste ala CEP to comp multiple tracks...

I´d use the numeric keys, 2 and 8 these moves the items up and down.
But you can also use ctrl-shift-C to "copy selected area of selected items"
And then ctrl-V on the destination track. This way you don´t have to split the item, if you prefer that.
And then if you use the CTRL-ALT-arrow up/down to change track, you can do this quite fast.(EDITED not mosewheel but arrow)
If you´re a non keyboard only mouse type then you can do rightclick to "copy selected area of selected items".

Yeah, right, BUT....

That brings me right back to my original question: I can't right-click to paste it where I want it on another track. If I want to do a crossfade I don't want to have to take up two track lanes to do what I can do on one. Copying isn't the problem, it's *pasting* where I want.

The problem is that there isn't a paste>replace function.

I just want to "copy selected area of selected item" and then "paste selection to replace area" on *any* other track, empty or not.

Now i get you. I agree.
I would like the paste to paste it so that it either replaces the old or put it on top as a new take. I don´t really care which way. But you´re right it´s not easy, if you wan´t to make xfades to the pasted item right now.
For me it would be nice to have it as a shortcut. Actually i would like it instead of the ctrl-v behavior of now, but another shortcut wouldbe fine too.
I think the "Paste Replace" is a good description for this behavior.
There´s one cool thing about the current behavior and that is that it´s easy so move the inserted clip back and forward, E.G a snare or a kick to be replaced. But for combing vox, guit, bas i find Xfades more important.

I guess what you'd have to do to get the functionality that you require at present is this:-

Use normal procedures to define the area you need, and copy or cut it as required.

Click on the place you want to do the "paste replace". Paste.

OK, that's pasted it, but it's not replaced what is underneath.

To do that, you need to double click on the item you've just pasted in - or shift double click if a normal double click would invoke the editor. (This is set in prefs - editing behaviour - mouse). Now you have a loop selection the the same size as the bit you've pasted in.

Now click to the left or right of the bit you've pasted in, on the item which is to be partially replaced by the pasted item. If you now press Shift+S to split at the loop selection, then press delete, you will have split off and deleted the bit that is beneath the item you pasted in. So you have completed the "paste replace".

Now that sounds long-winded but actually, once you've got the routine clear in your head, it's pretty quick to do.

Summary, to make it sound easy -

After cutting or copying, click at the target location, then...
Ctrl/v
Shift-double-click
Click to left
Shift+S
Delete.

Now you can use normal functions to crossfade at each end of the pasted bit, or move the exact edit point, or whatever.

..Or I could right-click for "paste and replace".

Sigh.

I read this quote and it got me thinking?

That brings me right back to my original question: I can't right-click to paste it where I want it on another track. If I want to do a crossfade I don't want to have to take up two track lanes to do what I can do on one. Copying isn't the problem, it's *pasting* where I want.

I just want to "copy selected area of selected item" and then "paste selection to replace area" on *any* other track, empty or not.[/QUOTE]

I copy some of my tracks, like acoustic guitar and vocals to other tracks, fine...but, always a but, these don't seem to have their own identity, they carry the same name as the copied tracka and aren't even available under the tracks listed. Wow, am I not catching something here. Please help me sort this out, so I can find the tracks or rename them so I don't mix them up or send them to other tracks for effects, thanks, psingman

Chip's got a good point. A "Paster / Replace" function (or whatever you'd call it) WOULD be very handy.

Now that there's a Glue function I don't think this feature will be far off. For the moment you can Ctrl+V, then select the layered Items and Glue.

Cheers,

Malcolm.

While I'd love the paste>replace function, what I was referencing there is that we *already have "paste"*, it's just that it's only on the menu bar instead of on the right-click menu like copy and cut.

That makes absolutely no sense to me. If you're copying/cutting something, it's to eventually paste it somewhere. Surely it wouldn't take much to duplicate an existing menu bar command on the right click menu?

Hi, yeah, glad you brought some of these mentions up. I am renaming the wavs now under item properties. You are right though, the wav takes on the features of its copied one. I have used a few other recording programs and that is not the case. What is really happening is, you have to be very careful, when you do these maneuvers as they want to go wherever, and usually not where you want them. I am going to spend this week, just practicing theses movements, as I believe you have to figure them out, so you feel comfortable working with them, then go back to recording. Keep up the C and P thread, please, psingman
