Adding color

Some decades ago you recorded songs on one console only, of course parts of a song were also recorded in different studios here and then, but mostly in one studio.
Today we have the luxury of having all kinds of console emulation plugins from SSL, Neve, API to whatever.

I am not sure if using too many different consoles and colors eg is the right way, but also I am not thinking it is wrong.
Probably too many colors could spoil a picture or in this case a mix!?
For sure too many different reverbs in one mix could become a mess imo.

I am just experimenting using SSL 4000 e only to give the song one color and one reverb only and I like the first result.

What are your thoughts and experiences?
