MIDI "arpeggiator".. is there such a thing?
Hi all, I wonder if what I have in mind is possible in Reaper, or through a VSTi.
I am an acoustic guitar player, and I don't have a MIDI controller. Usually, when I need extra sounds, I punch in the notes I need in the piano roll, note by note with the mouse.... which is time consuming.
What I would love to do is just type "Cmaj7" in a box, and the notes would appear in the piano roll... is that possible in any way?
cheap is good, free would be better

taken from page 208 of the REAPER user guide...(see bottom item "Scale and Chord"
The Transport Bar
This is located at the bottom of the MIDI Editor window. It contains the transport buttons and a number of drop down lists. The first six buttons perform similar functions to the buttons on REAPER's main transport bar. They can be used to rewind, start, pause playback, stop playback, jump to end, and to toggle repeat loop mode on and off. The loop area can be defined on the timeline in either the MIDI Editor or the main project window. In addition, you will see a number of drop down lists. From left to right, these are as follows.
Grid
This is the grid division box. It is used to specify your required grid division unit. Note that the units is Notes, and that you can select from any of the values listed – 1/128, 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 or 4.
Grid spacing type
Options here are straight, triplet, dotted or swing. If you choose swing, several other parameters will also be displayed on this bar. These are discussed later in the context of quantizing.
Notes
This is used to select the default note length (expressed as a fraction of a note) that is used when new notes are added. In the example above, this has been set to be the same as the grid setting. It can be overwritten using the main menu command Options, Drawing or Selecting a Note Sets Note Length.
**** Scale and Chord
Enabling the snap to scale option allows you to select a scale and a chord from the two drop down lists. You can also use the chords button (here labelled “Major”) to load a REAPER .reascale file. *****
Maybe this could work? Not sure if that is what you want?

I haven't had time to have more than a quick look at these,so they may not be suitable, but they're maybe worth a look:
7 Aliens Catanya is a
" Unique Midi Pattern Arpeggiator transforming simple chords into complex musical phrases in real time (VSTi)".
They also have W2 Harmonizer :
"Scale based VST Instrument Plug-in MIDI Harmonizer and Scale Viewer that converts single incoming MIDI notes into full chords based on selected scale"

There is a musical scale pitch 'quantize' function.
Kirnu's developer seems keen for it to be THE arpeggiator, so I wouldn't be surprised if a chord function came soon...

I 'think' the OP was asking for something diff... not exactly an arp fx but the ability to insert midid chords with just a single clk... no?
I don't know of anything that does this directly [but maybe there is such] however you could spend some time creating custom actions to do this for some chord types and then have them as icons in a toolbar for the midi editor.
I was playing with testing this a bit and noticed something that is not great... here goes:
there are actions to set the scale, but when you run those actions you don't see the scale change in the Scale box in the Midi Editor... this really should be improved and sync'd up. In other words, no matter if you set a scale from an action list or from the drop down with your mouse, what the current scale is should show ... it does show on the piano keys but not in the scale box at the bottom of the midi ed. [comon' DEV's!]
There is also a nice action, "Force selected notes to scale" that might be helpful.
Given that you can set a scale, and a chord type now, you can also paint vertically so what you paint is a chord of a type and in a given scale.
helpful? or not????

That is indeed helpful... Thanks a million, and sorry for the late reply.
What I didn't know, (and yes, I should know that one after 4 years of REAPER) is the "insert" function that allows you to throw in notes in bunches... THAT saves me time
