What do you mainly use Reaper for?

Pick the one point that fits best. If none of the points fit,
you would have to explain briefly what you mainly use Reaper
for (we once had a user who wanted to read in 20,000 midi
files and we never really found out why he did it).

All of the above but mainly on-site recording, live jamming, and running basic sound for rehearsals.

Not exactly a well designed poll, too much overlap between some of the choices and 90% of everyone will pick the last option

Should be like

Recording and Mixing
Live Audio
Midi composing
Post production Audio
Video Editing
Podcasts

I use Reaper for drum replacement all of the time. Gravitating back to using it for everything, soon.

That can be so.

There's always overlap, hence the question:
"What do you mainly use Reaper for?"

Mmmh? These are actually the same options, aren't they:

Recording and Mixing --> 5
Live Audio --> 5
Midi composing --> 6
Post production Audio --> 2
Video Editing --> 1
Podcasts --> 3

I use it as sort of a dating app. I only downloaded it so I could hang with all you awesome people, since I don’t have any real friends.

I use it

1. To make cheesy covers of dad-rock songs I like

and, during the pandemic

2. As a platform for amp sims and vst synths to play guitar and keyboards through Jamulus for online jams, band rehearsals, and Zoom shows.

W00t!

None of that holds.

I mainly use Reaper as a live instrument (versatile VST host) with three master keyboards plus Breath Controller plus Cotrol Surface.

Oops, I didn't think of that. Our live events are associated with
so much hustle and bustle that there are basically no computers
on the stage - at least not for the band itself.

Default General Recording

Of the list it is the nearest fit.

1. It allows use of vst sims, fx etc in home environment minimising annoying neighbours who don’t want what to some is ‘noise’ (even a small guitar amp).

2. It allows capturing ideas when they come for me to come back to.

3. It is a brutal practise tool that highlights every playing error you make, get it right! - This is real major use here.

4. It can introduce as many problems when you are not expert in ‘engineering/mixing’, so it’s a learning tool with a potential dark side that can kill an original musical idea at times ( combine that with practising and trying play things you want play along with - it can kill motivation, friend or kindred spirit it is not in these moments).

5. It has a good natured forum group out there in digital land… thank you

Post-production for television/streaming as well as scoring/composing. I can blaze through work projects because of all the customization Reaper allows.

"For composing songs from midi and audio recordings"

That strikes me as a very odd option.

Personally, I either compose before making a recording of that composition, or I compose during a recording (i.e. improvise).

Haaa, you are right, of course. It should be only:

This is called "making beats". SOP for the hiphop folks. They would be just as baffled by traditional composing/improvising/recording!

There is only two in that list that I DONT use Reaper for

The main one I use it for isnt on the list - Self-flagellation. Reaper is fully featured in that regard.

The common workflow I've seen is to lay down a basic track with midi/loops and then record vocals on top of it. Afterwards, the arrangement is completed. So I don't see anything wrong with that option.

I didn't say it was wrong. I said it strikes me (i.e. not necessarily you, nor anyone else) as very odd (because I don't compose that way and because there was no composing option in the list that appeared to describe the way I do work).

Default ¡ ReaRoute !

ReaRoute is the feature I use the *most* (but not only) (timewise), exactly all the time the computer is running. It is my global loudspeaker/room correction FX rack (mathaudio). All Windows sounds (music & video playback etc) gets passed through it.
(And used as VSTi-host too, to play along with some passed through audio.)

Perhaps we should try to create a poll that permits multiple choices with three levels of activity(a lot, some, occasionally?).

My primary activity is dialogue editing and mixing. Secondary is sound design for games,third is my hobbyist stuff around music composition and mixing.

Haha, that means Reaper is a playback device in the house for you?
We never had that ...

Yes, perhaps in the next poll.

This is interesting. Without putting unnecessary pressure on you, rain, I'd love to see a detailed breakdown of routing and use cases.

We now have exactly 100 voters, and the result is:

1. Video editing --- 1%
2. Postproduction --- 5%
3. Audio+Radio --- 1%
4. Sounds+Samples --- 8%
5. Band recording --- 26%
6. Composing --- 59%

This is interesting insofar as everyone posts here
from their "application point of view", asks questions
and possibly makes feature suggestions.

Ok, how about you think of the term "songs" as a kind of arbitrary
partitioning of music so that it can be listened to?
