Default a rap track and a question

I made this track from a rap acapella found online.
https://soundcloud.com/a-n-o-q/foren...remix-to-be-me

Later on I heard these tracks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBCSkPzjeMA
and noticed how the mix sound quite different. Sounds rounder, noticable difference in the high end, but I feel like there's something more.

I've been noticing this characteristic difference between other's mixes and my own, in all different genres.

Can anyone else hear what I'm talking about, or is it totally subjective?

Here's another comparsion. My remix: https://soundcloud.com/a-n-o-q/zutsuri-altaranoq-rmx
and the original track: https://soundcloud.com/zutsuri/altar

You're comparing two different styles in the first one so that's tough to make a comparison.

I'll just say my initial reactions to your mix:

Clap is tilted towards the low end and a bit quiet.
Hi hat is definitely too quiet.
Vocals sit in a different space than the rest of the mix. This is mostly due to so many background vocals, they are quite loud. I take it you probably don't have the multi track though.

Aural excitement of certain frequencies??? (choose carefully and keep them very subtle...mostly buried would be my advice there).
Would have to also guess at low end but I can't hear any definition with sr850 cans (good budget phones but not acurate monitoring)
Your remix sounds way better than original...night and day.

True, though I find these characteristic are common in modern tracks, regardless of genre. I'm just not sure how to define them technically..

low volume analysis/bandpass (narrow..ish)/sweep slow/sweetspots?/pick fq's/enhance/with exciters/probably don't allow excited fq's to push gain unless that is desired (so balance the effected with the original signals, keep them just underneath(if using Reapers js exciter "mixback" control).

*Note - might be worth it..might not...who knows?depends on lots of things.
Anyway, hope you find that secret sauce that others seem to be applying.

I guess it sounds funny when you put it this way.. if you're implying this is a case of overanalyzing on my part, you might be right :]

No...was not implying that. You should only spend as much time as you can afford. You know how to mix.
Over-analysis is my problem lol .
