reaMIXed: The Reaper Mixing Contest - July 2021 - Ode to Bregovic
REAPER CONTEST - July 2021
(ONLY REAPER PLUGINS ALLOWED)
OFFICIAL WEBSITE: reaMIXed.com
MIXING: 1-16 July
VOTING: 20-26 July
RESULTS: 28 July
FEEDBACK: 29-31 July
__________________________________________________
This month's song is Ode to Bregovic by Bella's Bartok courtesy of the Telefunken labs. The band describes themselves as 'an electric, brass-filled, accordion-based spectacle,' and that sounds about right.
Please remember:
-NO GLUING OF FILES
-ONLY NATIVE REAPER FX -or- non-Native JSFX files that you include with your submission.
You can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.
Again, no prize this month, aside from the customary track-picking privileges for the next month's contest.
Happy mixing!
-Daryl

Hey all... RL is getting in the way right now so I have been unable to devote enough time to finish a mix for the past few months and likely won't have the time this month.
I haven't quit, we moved on May 21 and we are still getting settled. Also I was given a huge promotion at work and have been in training for the past 7 weeks. I am a Case Investigator for Covid-19 working for the Springfield-Greene County (Missouri USA) health department.
To say it is a big job is such an understatement you wouldn't believe. If today goes well, I may become certified and get to jump in and help finally. Any prayers or positive thoughts are MUCH appreciated!
Anyway...I hope to be able to participate maybe next month. Meanwhile, I have been downloading and mixing the monthly tracks in what little ME TIME I am able to find. This month would be a complete nightmare for me. Looking forward to hearing what y'all do with it!
Cheers and good luck!

I have submitted my mix for this months contest! Crossing my fingers for a good result.
This one was a bit hard for me just because of the song and not wanting to listen to it over and over again. I understand sometimes you gotta mix what the client provides and you don't have to like it, but this one was rough.
As we wait for the voting and results, what is everyone's preferred Genre? Does that effect your mix?
I'll Start:
I'm a big fan of country music, mainly Outlaw, classic and Americana. These I think call for very upfront vocals and some nice guitar licks. I never even listened to the drums or bass for the most part until I started mixing.
I think this makes my mixes that I feel are correct are more vocal based and sometimes the kick and bass are just about missing in the mix as I don't listen for them. I also love the sound of Reverb, I like to put it on everything whether I need to or not. Stepping back and in this contest I am hearing it better and applying it more subtly.
What about you???

Just submitted mine.
I thought of taking a break this month but as soon as I listened to the tracks I couldn't avoid to give it a try; it's a dope, I'm afraid.
The song is crazy and it has been a joy to mix it; the things that came to my mind when listening to it were balkan, gypsy... and Kusturika. And that was one of my references. Gogol Bordello as well.
Regarding REDTone question I have been exposed to all sorts of genres all along my life; maybe more rock and pop (mainly indie) when I was younger. Nowadays I have turn to flamenco music, for instance, although it's just at my leisure, and I think that it has little to do with my mixes.
For me, any genre deserves my attention. Even the most despised or far from my taste.
Edit: I would have needed some extratime (and even a penalty shootout) for the final tweaks.

Back in the day when I used to participate in the contest one of the joys of it was getting to mix music I wouldn't normally have a chance to work with. Most of my experience is with indie rock, and working on hip-hop and country tracks was a real education.

@REDtone...
The bigger the challenge the more you learn, or at least the bigger the potential for learning.
I have done live front of house and monitors for just about every genre. I don't like them all, and admittedly there are some I like more than others.
As a musician I've played Metal, Blues, Southern Rock, Classic Rock, Reggae, Motown, Country and even a bit of rap.
My favorites are Metal (most call it classic hard rock and 80's Metal), Country, Red Dirt, Southern Rock, and Blues.
As a soundman I wound up doing genres I hadn't even listened to. So I did what you do when you care about your job. I did my homework and listened to some examples of the genre and bands I had the fortune to work with. Think of it as reference tracks in mixing in your DAW.
For all types of mixing, be they live or recorded tracks, reference tracks are your best friend. How can you make something sound like the CD or akin to the genre if you aren't in close contact with it?
Glad to see others in here adhere to that as a standard. Don't think of it as a crutch, think of it as an advantage!

I checked out your project file. Can you comment on why you used the channel time delayer with those settings on the drum overheads group?

Hi Dex, many thanks for your words.
I usually put this pluggin in oh and hats whith tiny values. I think it gives somewhat a wideness feeling that I like to use instead of just panning.
