Default Effect to make a constant sound slowly ebb and flow?

I have some drones that were recorded from a synth I no longer have.
I want to use them in the background of some tracks as in the thread title.

Tremolo is the first that comes to mind.

Also a slow phase or flange effect might work

Automate the volume - for example, quieter in the busy parts or where a vocal is, swelling up in volume in the gaps.

Automate slow eq sweeps - ReEQ, band set to boost then sweep the frequency, similar to volumes, duller when busy, brighter in gaps.

And as said before, lots of reverb phaser flanger etc.

Ebb and Flow while I'm sure are words that have perfect meaning to you, can be taken many ways...

I wonder if you might describe what you want in a more detailed way?

do you mean just volume up and down or panning around or some other kind of movement????

Perhaps the drones could be made into a Kontakt or other sampler instrument?

I think reaper has an lfo in the toy box also. You could sweep the pan, volume, even pitch (subtle). The sky is the limit.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm having fun playing around with them

@ hopi - Fair point I didn't have any technical descriptions in my mind last night so I went for nature. Nothing set in stone - I never know until I hear it whether it is what I want or not. A bit of everything and not too much of one or another....volume rises and/or pans or filter sweeps sometimes, different intensities of the same thing, colorations etc.

I'll end up using a combination of effects by the looks of it

Here's some links that interest me

SCroll down to graphic with description "to play album audio, hover mouse over numbered circles"

these samples:
A convoluted electronic synth pad swirling with a filter effect.

Big majestic analog synthesizer drone on Eb with slow filter sweeps in a huge space

That's an accurate description of the (free) GLFO

(which won't do pitch fluctuations like DLM Unstable)

I did not know about the GLFO vst... thanks for that one

It is pretty nice...

At the same time, the SWS\Padre LFO generator is really the whole ball o' wax... you do have to have the SWS extentions installed to get it, but everyone 'should' have them installed anyhow.

One of the Groove3 tutorials shows it in action and details how to use it.
...sorry don't recall exactly which tutorial it is on...

but basically, you set up automation envelopes, select one of them, call the action for that Padre LFO generator and run it... you will see the points generated onto the envelope...
don't like them? OK generate a diff set of points with diff settings in the generator...
Then of course you can further manipulate the evn. points in the usual manner...

I say it's the 'whole ball o' wax' cuz you can do LFO madness on ANY envelope automation.

That 'oughta' get you whatever EbbenFlow you can dream of having.

Thanks I'll give GLFO and Padre LFO Generator a go.

Is the latter beginner level to set up I've not used SWS or automation envelopes before
