Default Machine racing results - P4 vs Core 2 Duo

I've been retiring my Win98SE admin PC (keeping the XP P4 for audio etc) and installing a laptop, specs as follows:

HP NX8420

• Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66)
• 1gb of ram
• 100GB hard drive
• Dedicated 256MB ATI Radeon X1600 Graphics
• 15.4 Wide Screen WSXGA Screen HP NX8420
• Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66)
• 1gb of ram
• 100GB hard drive
• Dedicated 256MB ATI Radeon X1600 Graphics
• 15.4 Wide Screen WSXGA Screen

- and out of curiosity I've given it a quick try with a Reaper test project stored on a USB external drive, connected first to one PC then the other. The project has 42 tracks of CD audio and has the Ambience reverb on the first 4 tracks. Audio uses Wavpack format as does the render.

The P4 HT 3gHz 1gig of memory desktop PC takes 11'29" to render it - the laptop takes only 6'53. The desktop will play the project with 5 tracks having Ambience reverb on them without stuttering - the laptop manages 14 such tracks.

I did expect the laptop to give the desktop a run for its money but I didn't realise just how much faster than a standard P4 a Core 2 Duo can be (and this isn't a particularly fast one).
