Geoff, could we not have a button in the Config window to open it?
That would surely be the most practical universal way. Plus it would be very easy to explain, in the manual, for new users

Yes, long term that is the right solution.
But right now we need a way that takes into account the "Windows modal" problem -- Reaper is unresponsive to mouse/kbd input when Learn Window is opened on Windows platform -- trying to think of work-arounds -- getting out is easy, I'll put a Close button on the Learn Mode Window.

Would it be possible to put it in a Reaper action script?

Yes, I see that now, (can you tell I've used it zero times, makes no sense to me).
Weirdly Right click still works in Windows 7

New build is up.
Well, we have a workaround for now.
Running the Action No-op (65535) opens the Learn Mode Window.
There is a Close button on the Window itself.
So you can do it that way or use ToggleLearnMode like before.
This will keep us moving forward, whilst we work on a proper modeless solution in the background.

You really do owe it to yourself to check it out -- you will likely be doing all editing there.
It's improving, now when you turn a control, a lot of things happen if the Window is open, try it with some mapped FX

Yes, this is what I was thinking of, or even just retaining the CSI.INI settings as an option.

I'll have to take another look at it. I tried it over the weekend but couldn't figure out how to make it work. Is there a post that gives a basic step-by-step?

I was mostly thinking of it kind of like a try..finally. eg. For a PressRelease widget, you could have multiple actions bound with a Press modifier to make them occur on press, then whatever you want to happen at the end bound with a Release modifier.
You can probably achieve the same just by careful ordering, but this had the advantage of both being more explicit and tolerant of changes/edits.
Although now that I write this out, the disadvantage is that this is only for PressRelease :-) If this is a genuine requirement (and it's not clear it is) it's probably needed for more than just PressRelease.

Had another look with an existing zone, yes I see it shows me what I've already written, and when i turn a knob is shows that knobs "linked" action.
Things i think it missed, when i have used shift+someknob
LH-Menu shows someknob with tick on shift (good)
RH-Actions shows linked action (good)
ZoneWindow doesn't highlight the Shift+somebutton, but rather just somebutton. (Humm??)
Highlighting something in the LH-Menu doesn't highlight it's linked action in RH-Actions or ZoneWindow, or vice versa.
I feel if you click (not just knob) it should tell you whats linked and where.
I feel it should load the ActionsParams for the highlighted plugin automatically when opened,
Also how would you start from scratch making a new zone file?

The Windows modal issue prevents that for now, although that looks like a good solution long term.

Yes, it's definitely not finished, but putting it out there as I'm coding it so that I can get as much feedback as to layout, etc.
This thing is very complicated and intimidating when you first encounter it, I'm looking to you good folks to find ways to make it less so...

As a thought, personally I'd find it helpful for testing if there would be some kind of changelog for CSI where we could see what changed at a glance (wouldn't need to be as detailed as Reaper's changelog for example I think). Or is there and I missed it?
To give an example why, when I was getting back to testing after a longer pause I just found out by chance skimming through this long thread that meanwhile auto mapping of sends and FX was added apparently.
I know it's an ambigous suggestion because writing changelogs takes away from actual coding time so I can understand deciding against it.

Just got a Faderport v2 single fader device. I have transport controls setup, automation buttons work, but none of the channel controls work: fader, mute, solo, arm. I have mapped the midi values, can confirm in the monitor window and in the new Learn window that the buttons are mapped per the zon file, but the actions don't respond at all. I thought I recalled something quirky with Faderports, anyone know off the top of their head? It's not just the channel controls, even extra buttons I've mapped aren't working.

Are the Channel Controls in a Channel Zone ?
Does the Channel Zone have Track Navigator ?
Code:
Zone Channel1
TrackNavigator
...
ZoneEnd

Especially in the pre alpha.
But I definitely hear ya'
LearnMode is consuming most of the cycles right now, but docs are stacked up right behind, along with an implementation of Folders.
At that point we might even call a beta, then docs become even more important.
So, yeah, definitely get it, and the timing is about right -- I've even started to jot some tech stuff down -- and the "Control Surface Integrator" pdf in the build is usually, mostly, up to date... ... often

I used the stock MCU zon, changed the Channel|1-8 to Channel|1, used the same MST values, just removed anything higher than 1 (arm2, arm3, mute2, mute3, etc).
I also moved everything to the "button included zon" since the above didn't work, also removing the "1" in all the zon/mst statements....which didn't work either.

Aha, I see where it went wrong.
I'm not sure this will work, but the easiest might be to take the Stock MCU and make it look like this:
Code:
Zone Channel|1-1
TrackNavigator
DisplayUpper| TrackNameDisplay
DisplayLower| TrackPanDisplay
TrackTouch+DisplayLower| TrackVolumeDisplay
RotaryPush| GoZone PanWidth|
Rotary| TrackPan 0
RecordArm| TrackRecordArm
Solo| TrackSolo
Mute| TrackMute
Select| TrackUniqueSelect
Shift+Select| TrackRangeSelect
Control+Select| TrackSelect
Shift+Control+Select| TogglePin
Option+Select| TrackFolderDive
Fader| TrackVolume
TrackTouch+Fader| TrackVolume
FaderTouch| TrackTouch
ZoneEnd
and do the same in Home:
Code:
Zone Home
OnTrackSelection MapSelectedTrackSendsToWidgets
IncludedZones
Buttons
Channel|1-1
IncludedZonesEnd
ZoneEnd
Let me know if that works.

New C4 Configurator
Now creates only one Zone file on disk.
Eight 'Slots' to create Zones in.
Modifier support.
Backward compatibility uncertain, you have been warned

Nice !!
I was beginning to wonder where you were.
And yeah, toiling away on Learn Mode really makes me appreciate all the work you are doing, this is a VERY difficult UI to get smooth
In a lot of ways simply editing files is SO much easier...
Once again, thanks for the great work !!

Yes I have some funny stuff in there because...because. But other than transport and automation, nothing else is working.
But, if I use the native Reaper MCU config I can get it to work....if that means anything.

I don't like to leave things unfinished (famous last words ), so I wanted to get at least a passable multizone thing going c/w modifier support before moving on.

Absolutely, although people will expect the kind of learn UI you're working on now. For me, the principal attraction of the Configurator is that it can be used 'offline'. Once you've generated the raw FX files for your plugins, you can sit in the comfy chair in front of the TV with the laptop and create all the maps
I like the way learn mode is shaping up. I've been looking forward to trying out all the new stuff you've come up with One question, did I read a way back that CSI now auto generates the raw FX files now? I'm a bit behind.

Had the same experience with the Icon Nano. Mapped it, adapted the MCU Zone/mst as was suggested in this thread here then; unfortunately, it never worked, apart from the MCU functions like Transport etc. (which appear to be working with most controllers I tried out for whatever reason).
However, I don´t judge the Nano for my inability to prepare proper CSI .zon and .mst files; In the end I sent it back since in my hands it did not function properly under native MCU either.

Yeah, the architecture is holding up, the feature set is coming into view, and soon, bit by bit, there will be more and more .mst/.ost/.zon files availaable so you won't have to fight so hard...
We are close to emerging from alpha land, hang tight

Yes.
The VST spec (and most others like it) rightly states that all functionality is in the VST, no config files, etc.
That's a good thing, keeps things compact, reliable, no missing pieces, etc.
However it also means you can't find out what parameters are available for an FX unless you have one in your hand -- aka an instance inserted on a Track.
Well, now that the Learn Mode is realtime, you actually DO have an instance that you can query, now allowing autogen of Raw FX Files

So does that mean the disk file is no longer written? ie ZoneRawFXFiles is always empty?

No, it looks first, and if it can't find one, it autogens and writes it to file.
That way, if you have a special, customized one, it won't get clobbered, but rather, used, for the Zone(s) definition

How do you make it do that? If I have an empty RawFXFiles folder and load a plugin on to a track, I don't get a RawFXFile written.

It doesn't work that way anymore.
The Raw FX file mechanism for new FX is still not complete -- it will use Focused FX.
You can demo it now with existing though by doing this:
Empty your Raw FX files folder, storing the contents elsewhere temporarily.
Now, set up for Learn Mode by getting selection, etc., proper.
Adjust a control on a surface that is mapped to the current FX -- the Actions list fills wth the indexed FX params followed by the rest of the Actions.
Those params came from the newly generated file -- have a look at the RAW FX files folder

New build is up.
Selection is now coming together, try selecting things in various list boxes, let me know what you find...

The FX parameter list is out by one, 0 should represent the first parameter not the plugin name.
I don't seem to be able to get additional FX Zones to work properly anymore. The GoZone to the additional Zone works ok and I see the parameter names(aliases), but no values or control.

Hmmm...
The plugin name should not show up in the Action List.
Suspect the Raw file format.
Can you delete that Raw file, let CSI recreate it and see if the plugin name disappears and the indexing straightens out, I have a hunch...
Thanks.

I was just typing an edit when you posted
The parameter list is out by one when the RawFXFile was generated by the old system. If you remember, you put CR + LF as EOL, instead of just LF, as this ensured cross platform compatibility. The parameter list is fine when using newly generated RawFXFiles
