Bugs

1. Reaper uses incorrect notation font in some cases
(http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...60&postcount=4)

2. Scrubbing jumps to future measure
(http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...6&postcount=22)

3. Move edit cursor left/right by grid action does not work as expected

4. If you set Grid to a triplet setting, and have Notes: Grid -then you will get triplets in notation. However pauses are not added automatically if you'd manually enter a note.

5. If you zoom and scroll a bit (or sometimes just add or move around notes) the play cursor is shying away from the mouse cursor when trying to grab it.

6.The changes from 1/8 to 1/16 and back are really buggy. No proper Staff beaming and it results in wrong musical measures. try it in 3/4. You enter a 1/8 Note, change to 1/16 and can enter the next note a 1/16 later while the 1/8 is still there.

7. When you change the visibility of tracks, the staff view changes only after mouse over.

8. Correct rhythmic limits/construction when editing note lengths
(http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...8&postcount=55)

http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...0&postcount=67

http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...0&postcount=67

12. Crescendo and diminuendo symbols cannot be stretched.
http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...0&postcount=67

20. Inconsistent behavior when dragging notes backward
(http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...&postcount=111)

http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...&postcount=159

http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...&postcount=195

27. Increase the available attached symbols (bow direction comes to mind immediately, but there are several that can/should be available)... or better yet, allow users to create their own palette of articulations since music fonts tend to include a huge variety).

http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...&postcount=202

31. Allow clef changes per midi item. For example, the track starts in bass clef for 2 or 3 bars, but then the range increase to where tenor, alto or soprano clef becomes more appropriate. This helps keeps notes on one staff instead of numerous ledger lines. This is somewhat common for instruments with wide ranges (like viola, cello, and some wind instruments).

First bug, this is what I see.

I assume that I need to download a specific music font, correct?

This is awesome, thanks schwa for your effort. Is there an automaticable scroll view for the notation editor in the pipeline?

Although it sounds like it's not strictly a music font issue (based on Justin's comment), it may be worth notating that I have several music fonts installed on my system. Some freebies and the ones that came with Notion 5.

If I've got the correct button chosen, then the Notation toolbar button doesn't toggle its state.

It's definitely a font issue. REAPER comes packaged with the notation font it uses. Most likely your computer is choosing an already-installed one with the same name. We'll figure out why.

I have bravura installed, which was required for the very first version of REAPER notation over a year ago, so not sure if that's something.

Installed Bravura from http://www.smufl.org/fonts/ and it seemed to fix the issue.

If you don't mind doing a test, could you uninstall the public/system version of Bravura and see if the notation editor continues to work?

FR: single staff display option (or automatically for parts with a narrow range.)

in an orchestral score most instruments have a single staff only ... to see many at once...

when notes are very short and not on the beats I am seeing collisions with rests. A spacing algorithm should ideally be not linearly mapped to time.

Right click on the clef to change it. There is also an option under View/Piano roll timebase to display a continuous timeline, as opposed to the default page-like view.

The editor will almost certainly remain linearly spaced, for predictability when entering and editing notes.

I was just giving it a quick peek and noticed (on a Win XP VM in VirtualBox, so...) that when I drag the red cursor left or right with the mouse, it jumps to a measure in the future (distance seems to depend on zoom level) and wiggles there instead of under my mouse.

If I get a chance i'll test it on a 'real' machine.

You can enter text like "andante" or anything else. Hover over the top of the staff until you find the light blue notation lane, and right click. There is also a yellow lyric lane beneath the staff (or between the staves, if viewing treble+bass clef together).

That's a bug (happens when scrubbing in a MIDI media item does not start at the beginning of the project), fixing, thanks.

Nice. Which means a JSFX like this (http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...&postcount=144) would work well.

Do the included articulations (including slurs) impact the underlying MIDI?

Not at present. Some notation edits, like setting tuplets or creating grace notes, will affect the underlying MIDI. But dynamics, articulations, etc will not.

In the future, we might optionally attach articulations and other notation to VST3 expression messages, but that is not on the immediate horizon.

Just a thought, it might make sense to add a text event (or something similar) for on note articulations (such as staccato or slurs) allow keyswitching via JSFX.

Just a thought, it might make sense to add a text event for these as well to support keyswitching in a JSFX.
Notation and articulations are actually are stored as text events and can be read by jsfx. (Row notation can also be edited in other MIDI editor modes, but note articulations can't, to prevent them from getting detached from the notes they belong to.)

Probably best to start a separate thread about technical/API topics though.

Very cool. I'd be very interested to read how those events function.

By the way, the editor is already pretty slick. Thank you!

Hi Devs, nice work and I will definitely be using this for MIDI viewing/editing

I did however notice some unusual zooming behaviour in that depending upon zoom level a number of measures before the start of the MIDI item being edited may or may not be displayed. Not sure if this is intentional and whether it serves some layout/alignment function?

Looking goooood! (Btw, what happened to 5.16???)

Pretty exciting actually, this will change a lot of how I work in Reaper - Thank you!

Requests:
1. control over the stems direction so I can for example have two channels in same item having the first channel pointing up, and the other channel down
2. printing (yes, already answered)
3. layout control over bits and pieces, so as to avoid overlapping
4. text tied to notes (does not seem to be the case now? wait maybe, sort of confusing)

oh, my wife begs me to help out at home so got to go hehe

This is a FR, I realize it's early days but I just want to put this forward as early as possible in case that makes a difference to its eventual implementation:

An option to colour the note heads, just as one can in the piano roll, preferably with the midi note colour map.

I use that all the time in the piano roll, I find it enriches the reading of music with a new dimension of meaning. Would love to see this on the staff too

Default Key signatures

I think key signatures should be treated in a similar way to tempo and time signature, i.e. editable in the project settings and transport bar, and applicable to all midi items unless overridden. They could be changed at the start of any bar as for the time signature.

Bug: No support for swing grid in notation view?

Bug: When assigned to a toolbar button, notation view icon is not mutually exclusive to other 3 MIDI editor modes. It should be:

FR: Themeable notation view (background color and staff/note color) so that it doesn't kill my eyes when switching from my dark themed MIDI editor to notation.

Will there be Actions List context for notation view? How about customize menu/toolbar specific to notation view?

Well, you probably know that by splitting the item this can be achieved? Check out Nicholas draft for notation manual for more.

Ok, wifey again, so... I'll be back
