Map single fader to whatever is in focus, mouse clicked
Could this be setup just within reaper? With soft takeover preferably.
(not binding the controller permanently, released as you change focus)

Seems to make sense.
Using a Motor Fader would be more appropriate than "soft takeover".
Supposedly can be done by a script, supposedly needs to be done dedicatedly for thew hardware in question.
Maybe CSI has such a feature or might be enhanced accordingly.

There's an action "adjust last touched fx parameter" and yea you can make it soft takeover. Isn't that what you mean? I use an incremental encoder mapped relative for making adjustments to whatever param I last clicked.

Yes, that is exactly what I am after. I'll search for it among the actions then. L
What encoder are you using? I am thinking about tearing up an old ball mouse and add two rotary knobs.
... Motorized fader could be another solution, in some cases really useful, but a incremental rotary is probably easier to use as a general tool.

Arturia Beatstep. I also made the pads light up for selected track controls and various other Reaper toggles, which is handy as hell. Used LBX SmartKnobs script to provide the MIDI feedback. Too bad the knobs aren't lit.
OSC is another way to make custom controllers with feedback using an oldphone or tablet, but it's hard to beat the feel of knobs.

Love the Beatstep. Would recommend the Behringer X-Touch Mini, though if you need encoders with that script... worth it. 16 buttons, encoders with rings (customizable LED types, too)... I have three of them

Ooo yea that looks great. Too bad only 8 encoders, but would really pair well with the Beatstep. Alas I have too many damn controllers. Spent more time setting them up than using em.
This one is also super cool and you can customize what it does in any given app: https://www.contourdesign.com/product/shuttle/ but it barely makes it into my workflow and it makes me sad.
