Default Question about adjusting volume on MASTER track

I was wondering, I am trying using a GAIN plugin, but, I notice if I turn it up to a certain point I end up getting a Hissing sound.

Should I be usiing a limiter instead to control the volume on the MASTER meter"?

If there is some other way please explain.

BTW, I am using the Youlean Loudness meter. I'm just trying to avoid the Hissing sound if I can.

Do you notice the hiss only when you don't play anything, just raising the levels high enough? If so, I'd guess the hissing is the background noise in your signal chain. If it's too loud and starts to mess the actual audio, you'd have to try and hunt what is causing it. Noise gates are the specific tool the get rid of (low level) noises.

Some of the "analog mojo" plugins can intentionally add some hiss and noise, so check if you have some of those in your chain.

Now that I look closer to my project on my MASTER track I have the following:

(Only because I saw someone have these in a video I caught on YouTube)

At the moment I have in the following oeder:

-Gain
-Compressor

-Event/Horizon limiter (To be sure the MASTER does not clip. At least that is what the guy in the video I was watching said is the reaso he outs it on there!)
-Youlean Loudness Meter

I'm thinking to remove the compressor and control the volume on the MASTER with the Event Horizon Limiter/Cipper. Then be gentle with the GAIN.

Thoughts on this idea? Or does anyone have another one?

As a simple soul I'd turn off all FX and then turn each one on by itself. That should show where the noise is from. Less is usually more too with FX!

I once had a hiss problem that I traced back to a snare bottom I had added a slammed compressor to in an attempt to recreate a rehearsal room vibe.

Obviously I'd long forgotten about it when I reopened the project and noticed the master had a constant level of chatter.

I actually enjoy the fault finding and analysis involved in working out why most of my mixes don't sound as I planned them
