Default How to get more inputs...

Currently run a UMC1820 with an optical connection to ADA8200.

I would like to add a full range of close mic'ed drums, and would like an addition 16 inputs.

Ideas:

1) Get something from like MOTU that has 16 channels plus two digital expansions. This is the clean, elegant, and simple solution, but pricey.

2) Just get another UMC1820 and ADA8200. Would I be able to run them together via USB or is there word clock problems? I guess I could switch the regular interfaces off and drum ones on, but it would be rad to have 32 inputs if possible.

3) Any other mystery ideas from the groupthink?

I have linked two Roland
Studio Captures together
to get plenty of inputs.

You connect them together via S/PDIF for
clocking purposes (master/slave).

The driver is designed to bring in
all inputs using two USB
cables. All audio inputs will be
on separate tracks.

I have done this many times and
I've never had a problem. Everything
was rock solid. Plus, the sound quality
is excellent.

You can also input or output digital
audio on the remaining S/PDIF connections
that are not being used for syncing.

You can download all of the manuals
from the Roland's website for the unit.
There is plenty of information in the
manuals on the topic of syncing them
together to get maximum inputs.

You are welcome.

The units are worth looking into if
you are looking for plenty of inputs,
flexibility, a great sound, no latency
direct monitoring, all on a modest
budget, these units are worth the
investment. These units are a high
quality product and very stable in REAPER.

It has direct monitoring on the unit? The reason I ask is that I run Reaper on a Linux computer, and sometimes it’s a little janky to run ant digital monitoring on Linux.

I specifically bought the UMC1820 because it has direct monitoring.

Yes, the unit has direct monitoring.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
operating system. I'm not using
Linux. I would check Roland's information
in regards to compatibility with Linux.

Update:
I looked at the manual for
the Roland Studio Capture
and I do not see any information
indicating that the drivers are
compatable with Linux.
I see Mac and Windows.

If its of any use...

I use a Behringer Xenyx UFX1604, 16 channels, firewire to the pc or standalone usb recording.

Its a big solution, but its 16 channels!

I just expanded my IO with the Cranborne Audio ADAT500. With my existing Motu, I am going out through ADAT to the 500, which gives me 8 new IO. I can route these back into the DAW via ADAT or use the summer to bring a stereo pair back via analog....and I get 8 slots for 500 series modules.
