Default Why when an item is split all parts take identical names?

If you split an item named 'Kick', it shows up in the Media Bay as 'Kick' and 'Kick'.

Split it again and the new part will again be named 'Kick'.

If you perform a lot of splits, you'll have many items with exactly the same name.

Can't Reaper avert this problem and apply '-01', '-02', ... when splits occur?

+1 Yes, this has been brought up in multiple threads. The desired behavior would be splitting -01, -02, etc. as you said.

But... they are all the same item. It is just that Reaper after the split shows the part of that item according to the time. Take an item, split it, pull one of the parts to a new track and drag it out, you will see that all of the item is there.

I can see the usefulness of numbering the splits sequentially, but I also see the danger in assuming that they are different files. They are not. The splits are non-destructive (except for in a few cases).

Of course it isn't a destructive edit. But it SHOULD be a different name. This is how it functions in every other DAW I can think of. If you are doing drum editing for instance and you have edited 8 different snare hits, how are you supposed to know which one is which? They are all named snare. There is a reason you split them to begin with.

Yes, what Klangfarben said.

If you edit each one differently so what you hear is not the same for every split item. And of course once you split it's guaranteed you no longer have the original item in tact so the name should indicate this.

I think item length is important indicator if any two are the same or not, even if their hidden content is the same when you drag it out.

Sure, the source media is the same but their usage in your project is different.

+1

Items should never be named identically by default.

1a, 1b, 1c etc might work then each split part would show any changes/additions made ... or not

so you might have the snare as 1a 1a 1a as unchanged then 1b as it has item reverb, 1c has distortion etc

I use a lot of pooled midi and always wanted to see all parts in one place, but yes, one part (pattern) can take much more entries because of slices, velocity gain, stretching and pitch. So it can be 10 midi parts in song, but 30 entries for it in "Media Items" tab in project bay. And actualy thats fine for me, this how it works for items, but problem is there is NO entries for "in project MIDI" in "Source Media" tab. Dont know why.
I'm thinking creating FR for it. Or maybe for option to group items in "Items" tab somehow by source.
But first more straightforward for me and maybe easier to implement.

example

In this case just 4 entries in "Source Media" tab would be more useful.
