I am curious as to why? Windows 7 hasn't been released yet. Won't you have to rebuild from scratch once it is?

Yes. But I'm feeling adventurous.
Anyway, rebuilding wont have to be done until June 2010, got a good year of usage ahead of me (hopefully) before I need to worry about doing a fresh install of the retail version.
I was using a Hackintosh, but I got annoyed at the non-functionality of certain things, and rather than fix them, I decided to give Win7 a go.

There is a release candidate now, Chris. It expires in June 2010; plenty of time to check it out!

Nice man! I think I might! Let me know how you get along with it - I know Jay Merrill says he uses it and it's solid. Wondering about performance, and if there is a difference with XP.

Windows 7 is really great. I've been using it since the beta was first released and there have been zero problems reaper-wise. I did have to change the FireWire drivers to legacy mode to get my firepod to work but that's more than likely a presonus problem than an ms problem. Other than that, it's amazing.
I'm interested to see your experience with the os!

Y'know what, I read that too, but so far I haven't had to do that with my Profire 2626. I just manually installed the Vista driver, and it works great! I've yet to try it on a multi-track Reaper or Ableton session, but I'm listening to mp3s right now, and not a hitch.

Actually - Shyt!! Now that I think about it, I am using dual video cards, and one of them is pretty old (Pre G-Force NVidia) - wonder if I could get away with using an XP driver?
Can you do that? Honestly don't even know - I've been on XP since it came out! (Oooh, I am sooo ready for a new OS!!)

I haven't even checked - I figured the card was so old they may not even have a Vista driver. I will have to check that out. Thanks dude.

I've been using and enjoying it.
One thing though, although the RC officially expires in June 2010, for practical purposes it's useless after March 2010 when it will start rebooting itself every 2 hours as a gentle reminder that it's going to expire in June.

W7 here too.
Loving as well.
I had to use the legacy Firewire driver in order to get my RME FF800 to work... and that is on either the on board firewire and the TI card.
I am looking forward to upgrading the essential VST FX (schwa and Stillwell can ya hear me ) and trying that bit bridge thing... I'd love to see what a 64bit daw feels like with oodles of ramage.
greetings

I'd be wary about installing Window 7 RC1 on a system that's not properly backed up. When I tried it myself, I had boatload of problems with it, and not the small nitpick kind.
For instance, once when moving a folder from on drive to another, the process hanged which resulted in about half the files irrecoverably corrupted.
Then I inserted one of them USB data key thingy, well again the explorer window hanged and I ended up with corrupted file system(FAT 32) on the key. Had to use my laptop to reformat the drive so it could be used again.
It isn't such a big deal for me because all my data is at least triple, and often quadruply backed up.
That point out that there's probably driver(s) on my system that 7 doesn't like at all, but that isn't the point. The point is that anybody taking on a beta operating system without proper backup is asking for trouble.

I tried for 2 weeks to download it, and never got a good one, so I chalked it up to typical M$...
I really don't have a reason to leave XP Pro, it has pretty rock solid for 3 years now for me....
Tho I do like reading about 7, so please keep posting reports!

I love how much quicker and "snappier" it feels. It also has more drivers for older hardware in-the-box, and if it doesn't, the hardware installer will automatically search the internet for you and tell you where you can possibly find them.
Device Stage is awesome (even though not too many companies have created them yet.) It's basically command-central for your devices. Example: in the Win7 beta, I plugged in my Sansa View mp3 player and it had it's own fully branded window that included options for syncing, upgrading firmware, browsing files, battery life, etc.. Unfortunately, the device stage for the View was pulled from the RC. No idea why..
Jump lists make things really easy. Just right click the icon on the taskbar and it'll show you a "recent" file list and whatever else the developer decided to program. For REAPER, it makes opening projects super fast.
The new taskbar is basically quicklaunch + windows taskbar combined, which is brilliant.
Windows XP emulator is available for programs that won't work with Vista and up.
There's way way way more. I could go on for a while..
Long story short, it's much more than a "glorified Vista."

Computers... for me it was a string of BSOD, followed by hanging process, software that didn't work even in compatibility mode, computer refusing to shutdown... worst OS experience since the first version of Win '95.

Could be a single piece of hardware that 7 didn't like at all and caused all that BS(except software compatibility, of course). But I didn't have the time to start a troobleshooting spree, so I just chucked it.
But I'll repeat again. People, backup your stuff before messing about with beta OS; if you don't, and come crying later that you lost months of work, well, being the SOB that I am, I'm gonna laugh at ya!

i'm still running xp (turned down vista upgrade) and have been running dux's xp for while now, which is the cat's shaved ass for my needs. i'm fine using a classic look, i have plenty of snappiness/stability, i can find everything on my machine easy enough. i guess all that i would be interested in is any performance improvements, which i'm doubting would be the case on my wimpyish machine (1.7 core duo, 2 gb ram, notebook). suppose i'll stick with what i have for now and check out 7 when i get to build a quad or better.

I've been using Windows 7 RC on my laptop since it was released a week or so ago and it's excellent. I tried it on my main DAW (REAPER!) PC, though, and I found REAPER 2.58 didn't run quite as well as on XP; it kept stalling/pausing although it didn't actually crash. Anyway, I reverted to XP on my DAW. Maybe REAPER 3 will work better on W7, I've not tried it yet.
My main gripe with 7, and it's the same with Vista when I tried that, is that I can't seem to play CDs via my Audiofire12. Windows Media Player, for example, just refuses to play anything whereas it works perfectly with XP. I can play CDs using the sound chip on the mainboard, so I presume it must be something to do with Windows' DRM obsessions. Unless I'm missing something.

bullshark, did you do a clean installation of windows 7?
I have been running the 7 pre-releases on a lowly PC I use for internet browsing/media center (single core AMD Athlon, 2GB, 780G). It feels fast and responsive out of the box, no tweaking no shutting down services. They did optimize the whole UI drawing routines. I think you need a WDDM 1.1 driver to get the whole improvement. It's stable for the basic tasks I've listed.
Other than that, it's nothing too important over Vista. I wouldn't rush to build my main DAW on the 7 RC, unless I had nothing better to do.

I tried (was it 5000 or 7000) build, it felted quite good. But drivers for EMU 0404 USB and M-Audio FW1814 were from poopie-land, so I let it go. Maybe when drivers are out (final release and updated drivers) I'll give it another chance. Happy with my DuX-XP, only for audio, njet internet or other things (ubuntu for rescue!).
Cheers! (Hmm, beer..)

Been using Windows 7 for a few months, damn solid, and the drivers for my 0404 USB work flawlessly with it.

Fresh install on a recent, freshly formatted HD, using a legit version of 7 x64 downloaded from Microsoft using their own utility, the ISO verified after burn to a Taiyo Yuden blank DVD.
I would never upgrade an OS under any circumstances or for any reasons, it goes on fresh, or not at all.

Heya,
Yeah I can play cd's; just listening to Photek's 'Form and Function'
I'm using an M-Audio Profire 2626. I'm not using the legacy driver, I'm using the 'texas instruments ohci compliant' driver.

No. I'm now using Windows 7 full-time. I can play CD's just fine.
All in all, apart from iLok driver installation, it has been the EASIEST setup I've EVER had.
-WinXP: Always needed to trawl about the internet looking for drivers for motherboards, because I'm a slob and keep losing the driver CD's. You also need to apply a bunch of tweaks like what you read on MusicXP.net.
-OSX: Admittedly, it's not the case on a REAL Mac, but on a Hackintosh, the maintenance and setup is a big pain in the ass compared to Win7. You can't upgrade OS stuff easily, and even my blood eSata ports wouldn't work!
Windows 7 seems to be damn near perfect at the moment; I'm still digging in deeper, but it really does work great.
