Default Beginner piano and strings VST

Hi, all. I'm getting my kid set up with their first makeshift studio as they head off to college and am looking for recommendations on good but affordable VSTs that cover piano, strings or, ideally, both.

Currently looking at Grand Rhapsody from Waves for the piano. Not sure on the strings. Thoughts?

If he plans to be a pianist at all he should have something much better. I suggest stretching for Pianoteq Stage and downloading the free KivIR collection for that.

Strings are another matter. You could use synth pads from free synths for strings if the budget is blown by Pianoteq.

Also collect the the free Spitfire Labs instruments.

Thanks for the quick reply. They can play a little piano, but they're not a piano player. More singer-songwriter. They just want a decent piano and string sound to serve their demos. Hopefully, that helps.

Oh, if you are splashing out for more than one child they should at least have one copy of Pianoteq between them.

Here is a free piano plugin that sounds great.
I use this one often for my recordings.

There is no software installer that
is needed to use this plugin.

Download the plugin (dll file)
and put it into your third party plugin
folder that you use for REAPER and its
ready to use.

Enjoy.

One other thing: I bought two of the Waves piano instruments when they were on sale for practically nothing and they both take a LONG time to load. There are so many excellent keyboard virtual instruments out there, I suggest you use something else.
My personal go-to is Toontrack`s EZKeys, which has a huge range of keyboard add-ons available for purchase if your offspring decide they really like keyboarding. I bought it when you got a basic grand piano plus two other keyboards of your choice for the same price as just the basic EZKeys on its own. A great deal.

Default Piano and more

For kids (and beginners) you may install the Native Instruments Komplete Free version.

It comes with many basic plugins from NI and some piano sounds. As it is completely free it is a good start.

I also have all of the Waves Piano VTS mentioned above. For special sale price they are ok, but I would not spent the normal price on them. For a start they are quite useful though.
