Default GROUP MIX week1: "Strange Faces" submissions and discussion...!

Week 1 Submissions

This week's goal was to mix down the stems from "strange faces" using only reaper/free plugins, and to share your reaper session file as well as a rendered mp3 mixdown.

----------------------------------------------
the original stems are here: http://auraleo.com/mixit3/
(originally from http://thewombforums.com/showthread.php?t=7511)
-------------------------------------

As for your submissions, please include your .RPP session file and a mp3 of the rendered mixdown. If you use any free non reaper plugins please include links to them as well. And for those that use outboard gear/pay plugins you are more than welcome to submit your mp3 mixdown's here as well (i will mark those separate so everyone knows there is no reaper file included).

You can PM your submission links to me or post them in this thread.
Either way I will continually edit this first post to include a list of each person's mix.

thank you again to everyone participating!

It was a lot of fun mixing without my standby UAD plugins and I learned a lot. I don't think the mix turned out half bad either. The reverb was adequate but I much prefer pay reverbs. It was hard getting out the boxy phasey kind of sound but it worked out ok. I also miss Panman for some experimantal quick panning of things but automation works fine too in this pinch. Reapers eq worked great...I miss the standby UAD eq's but I was pleasantly surprised with how quick I got what I wanted which was nice. The compression didn't come as quick and I didn't get exactly what I wanted but I found ReaComp to be incredibly versatile and worked well under multiple different situations. Too fun but....

Where's your submission Slops o' pal????

Default Sundevil98 1.0 Submission

Here's my first attempt. Decided to try this out while watching the game tonight, just finished it up.

This is about the 5th or 6th song I've mixed, so I'd appreciate some feedback. My plan is to try this once, listen to everyone else's submission, and go back and incorporate the things I liked in the other mixes... I figure that's the best way to learn.

I used a couple of non-Reaper/Cockos plugins, but they were free:
Kajerhus Classic Compressor: http://www.acoustica.com/plugins/vst-directx.htm
Kajerhus Classic Reverb: (ditto)
Vesco FreeHaas delay: http://www.vescofx.com/vfxFreeHaas
Vesco FreeQueue: http://www.vescofx.com/vfxFreeQueue

Here is my mp3 file:
http://www.box.net/shared/z9kvj12h0y

Project file is attached.

I like the echo-y stereo effect you used on the vocals... Way cool!

I like sundevil's mix pretty much.... nice ... ummm hard to tell on a streaming mp3 sometimes but maybe just a tad over the top... actually so far they all have their own nice aspects

I've had a listen to the uploads so far. Already learned stuff!

I really like Louie's mix. Levels are balanced well. Made me think I should have maybe used a bit more reverb on the vocals (though still not as much) and also a bit of high-end reduction on the drums. I'm a fiend for high frequencies and I gotta change this!

Camenrondye's aint bad either. Good levels. A little too much vocal fx for me. Can't hear the B3 organ much near the end. I chose to boost this considerably to add to the progressing intensity but it's level may have been slightly excessive. Good touch with the flanged sounding Rhodes outro!

I like the bass' tone in SunDevil98's mix, but I think it's too loud. Seems to interfere with other instruments by stealing their speaker energy. It dwarfs the guitar in the mid section, which should be the focal point. The guitar could do with brightening up a little to help it stand out more as I can't hear it much but, as mentioned, the bass will be affecting it too. The vocals sound great! I like their level and the amount of reverb applied.

In Bullshark's mix, I think the vocals are too loud. The other instruments sit together alright when they're alone, but they seem to cower down to the voice. The organ seems to have gone astray at times, being in places it shouldn't be. Good use of panning, like the organ/guitar separation near the end.

From listening to the tracks so far I've already found many things I would apply to my mix if done again. I'd slightly reduce the levels of the bass and the drums, and reduce the high end of the drums. Have slightly less compression on the drums too. I'd give more reverb to the vocals and reduce the delay amounts in some places and raise it in the more spacial areas. I'd also try and EQ more highs out of the B3 organ, especially on the rolled transition into the ending section.

Good valuable stuff! Hope you guys find my comments useful. Looking forward to checking out the .RPP files when I've got time!

ok, finally got a mix done of this song and put the links up in the first post.

this was definitely a good exercise for me. i did the whole mix with just reaper/js plugins. this really made me dive into the js folder and experiment for awhile to find what plugins would work. it actually got a bit late over here while working on this so towards the end i had to finish the mix on headphones (booooooooo). i can pretty much guarantee tomorrow morning when i hear this on my monitors i'm gonna notice some stuff that immediately needs to change. lol.

so any feedback any of you could give me would be most appreciated. please feel free to point out whatever seems a bit off in my mix so that i can hopefully learn from my mistakes and improve.

thanks again to everyone thats been a part of this.
i actually feel a bit productive today finally finishing this mix.

ok, just listened to everyone's mixes so far.
damn, you guys really make me want to change stuff in my mix immediately.
lol.

xaenima - clean mix. right from the beginning of your mix it made me realize that i cut the low frequencies too aggressively in my mix. your rhodes and bass tone on your mix sound nice and warm. i also liked how you brought the organ up front in your mix. i think the organ was a bit of an after thought for me in my mix, which i regret now. good mix overall.

louie - damn. good mix. and you actually used the tambourine track. i muted that track after a couple of minutes of battling it in my mix. really solid mix. the vocals are clear the whole time without getting in the way or overpowering the other instruments. good job.

camerondye - wow thats funny, we kinda did slightly similar things with the vocal fx on the first verse. echo/pan for the last word in each line. but i think after spending my time fighting with the reaper/js plugins to get a halfway decent sound i ended up making the fx WAAAAY wetter than i normally would have. good guitar tone in your mix. and i liked the slight weirdness you got going on in the outro with the rhodes. nice mix.

sundevil98 - i like the separation and different tones you got for everything. as for odd stuff i think the things that stick out for me in this mix are the compression and the bass level. the bass seems a bit too loud to me overall. the tone sounds fine, it could just go down a couple dbs. and the compression seems like its compressing a bit more than it needs to. you can hear it with the snare. it sounds like the snare is far away from you from getting compressed so hard. other than that, pretty good mix.

bullshark - i like the panning in your mix. you pan a lot harder l/r than i usually do. but i think overall it worked out well in this mix for you.

alteregoxxx - really nice mix. drums sound very solid and are even volume wise throughout. nice work.

hearing everyone's mixes has definitely been an eye opening experience for me. all good results, but definitely different from one another. there are some aspects of my mix that i know i should change, or at least pay attention to in the future for any other mixes i do. gonna spend some time over the next day or two going through everyone's session files to see how everyone accomplished what they did. comparing what everyone else is doing to what i'm doing should hopefully get me pointed in the right direction.

great stuff all around.

Hey people,

here's my first version. [EDIT updated links]

mp3: http://www.box.net/shared/mtjul2exom
rpp: http://www.box.net/shared/zlrtqxrtfo

I may have ignored some of the subleties of the original mix and made it a little more guitar-heavy

I used only Reaper plugs plus Voxengo Overtone GEQ, Redshift Overdrive / Pickup Replacer and Simulanalogs DS-1 and JCM900 and Smartelectronix Ambience and Ferric TDS.

I'm in a bit of a hurry, so later tonight or tomorrow I'll add download links to the external plugins and I'll also chip in on the other (very inspiring!) mixes.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...

I guess it's no surprise what instrument I play in my band? I love the tone of the bass on this tune... But, I agree, the more I listen to it, the more I realize that the level of the bass is a little too loud.

I'm really interested in going in to everyone's RPP files to see what y'all did for the drums. Some of you guys really were able to get more out of them than I was able to.

I did some digging, it's interesting to compare to what Strange Faces chose for their final mix:

http://www.myspace.com/strangefacestheband (it's embedded in their player)... Personally, I'm not a big fan of the panned hard organ, but it sounds good.

Honestly, all these mixes sound good. There are minor things I'd change here and there (even on my own mix). That's what makes this whole thing interesting, what sounds "right" to one person, is completely different for each individual.

I hope to help you guys out with my own feedback when I get a chance down to take some notes while listening.

Also, I can't get this song out of my head... I kept singing it in my head while playing hockey tonight... To me, it's exactly the reason why I don't hunt... But that's a whole other topic for discussion.

seriosuly man, when i was writing up a review of your mix i was so tempted to ask you if you were a bass player. lol. i could tell, just because that is the same exact type of mix i would have done when bass was my main instrument. i could tell you were focusing on the bass in your mix. which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but as an overall mix it can be a hurdle to get over. i have the same exact issue with mixdowns of my own stuff that never see the light of day. the instrument i am focusing on at the moment will always get the most attention. its hard to get around that.

thanks for the link to the final strange faces mix. there is a lot of panning in their final mix. it sounds cool, but nothing i would have ever attempted. which is definitely a learning experience in itself for me.

i can definitely say from listening to everyon's mixes in this thread i have a healthy amount of complaints about my own mix (drums eq'd too bright, vocals fx's too wet, low frequencies cut too much out of other instruments, etc...). this has already been an awesome learning experience for me comparing what i did wrong in this mix to what others did. moving forward i hope to continually improve,as others on here should as well. this format really lets you hear/see what you are doing right/wrong and move from there. within the last couple hours of listening to everyone else's mixes this has been the best learning experience for me in a long time.

My mix http://www.box.net/shared/0gtabroox3 and .rpp http://www.box.net/shared/94eet2xv0s

Only used Cockos/JS plugins in this mix, thought it would be fun, which it was

Very interesting / wierd lyrics, is it just me or is this song about a trophy animal shoot for fun/sport and vertually begging to be finished off "chringe"
Different angle for a song i suppose.

I'm looking forward to checking out the .rpp files submitted, plenty to learn from this for sure.

Cheers

ok so i finally got to hear my mix on speakers at a decent level.
yup, definitely found lots of stuff to change.

i just now updated my mixdown and session file.
i took the fx down a bit, brought the organ up, and changed some other levels here and there.

but still lots of issues i'm trying to deal with though. i can still definitely hear the compressor working too hard in the later half of the song, and there are some frequencies fighting each other especially with the vocals and higher frequencies. it always seems like either i separate instruments too much and they don't sound good together or i don't separate them enough and they start masking each other.

ok, definitely time for me to start opening up everyone else's sessions and start studying...

Mixdown (normalization and fades added separately): http://www.box.net/shared/djm37hghny
RPP: http://www.box.net/shared/ddxdf2209e

Hope the links work... IIRC I only used Reaper effects, except for reverb, for which I used Variety of Sound epicVerb. I'd like to hear what everyone thinks of my mix.

Here is my submission

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14176541/StrangeFaces-Mix.mp3

I used mostly Sonar included plugins
- Sonitus EQ
- Sonitus Compressor
- Boost 11
- Perfect space - Warm Ballroom Verb
- Steven Brambley D2 Compressor (love this compressor)

I also posted my Reaper Session, but with the plugs I used, I don't know how much use it will be.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14176541/Str...Mix-cockos.zip

Now I can listen to everyone elses once my ears relax.

Forgot I used Sonar's Vocal64 for the vocals (compression, eq, deess)

Here is a link to the D2 compressor.

Had the chance to listen to 3 mixes

camerondye: Way too much movement in the mix for my taste. Especially the vocals drifting off to the left.

Louie: Great mix. Maybe a little heavy on the right side, because of the guitar, and too much reverb on the vocals, but all in all: great

Xaenima: The drums seem a little over the top, especially the snare (I do like the sound, I just don't think it fits this song). Love what you did with the guitar feedback part.

Okies, had some spare time to spend yesterday and decided to give this one a shot. The mix is still somewhat raw and I might have made it a tad too dark, dunno *shrug*

http://alturl.com/6tbay

EDIT: the link containts now a tad more brighter version of it, the initial was indeed too dark heh.

I think this is a really fun project, and a good way to improve our expertise at mixing. I hope therefore that more mixes are still to come.

My submission can be found here (mp3): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8504034/Stra...ces_nafquo.mp3

and here (rpp): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8504034/Stra...ces_nafquo.RPP

The only non-reaper plugin i used is imperfection (i just cannot seem to not use it) which can be downloaded for free at http://www.dontcrack.com/freeware/do.../Imperfection/

Default camerondye Mix#2

Ok, after the suggestions I re-worked the mix I initially did. I didn't take on other people's ideas I just changed settings on my initial mix including lessening the vocal treatment since that was the resounding complaint on my mix. The limiter I was using was doing funky things so I took it off and just raised the volume on ReaComp on my master buss till it hit -.6 or so and left it unlimited. I'm going to go back and listen to other mixes and put up some comments now that I've reworked my mix.

Ok, here's mine. I've been listening to some of the other mixes. It really neat to see the different directions people took it.

It’s weird, when I looked up this band they are actually a local band to me…small world. I love listening to everybody’s mixes and hate commenting on it but I feel like I’m not participating so I went and listened to all the current mixes and made comments. Everything is probably tainted by what I heard right before but I did my best. Nice job everybody…cool stuff. I love this song, it’s a really cool song to start off this project with IMO. Remember these are just my opinions and we're all trying to learn and get better. Anybody who has questions about anybody's mix or how they did something should definitley speak up because I'm sure everybody is following the thread.

Xaenima – Things seem to be fighting for space on the mix a bit at parts. I think the b3 is a touch loud at times but it’s tough with a mono guitar where they should have doubled it.

Louie – Everything seems pretty good but it didn't seem like you were going out on a limb on anything and making it your own

Sundevil98 – I’m a bass player too and love loud bass but maybe a little too loud. I think that you hit the drums a little too hard with the compression and you can hear a little too much squash on the vocals on the loud parts.

Slops – I haven’t looked at anybody’s RPP files yet but your guitars sound very Black Sabbathy at parts (Never Say Die era). Not sure if you used a doubler and a lot of eq or what but it seems a touch razory…it’s cool sounding but it may be too much for this tune. I’ll have to see what you did to get this going.

Wolfman – Vocals are a bit loud, guitars have a bit too much reverb but I like the direction you took with the mix

51m0n – Your vocals sound boxy where it sounds like you have phase issues and at times doubled funny. Also start Eq’ing your reverb sends so you don’t have so much low end mud…it makes it sound like way too much reverb. Fun stuff and you definitely went for a sound which is what you should be trying to develop

k235 – It seemed like your drums, especially snare, are in too different of a space than everything else with how you use reverb. Lots o verb on the guitars for me and the bass is very bassy. Vocals seem to be getting covered up because everything is fighting a touch. I like how you automated out the reverb on the last line.

Keefee3 – Vocals don’t seem to be loud enough is my main thing. Initial and end delay on Rhodes is a bit loud but cool idea. I like the delay on the guitar but the guitar disappears a little much for me at times. B3 is hot for me but cool mix.

L0calh05t – Vocals are sitting on top of the music instead of being inside it, use reverb to move things back in a mix that are sticking out in front. The Rhodes is louder than everything at times, maybe automate it a bit to keep the volume at the right level. Concentrate on having one item at a time being the focal point and everything else backing up that item because it seems like things are fighting to be in front especially on the chorus. Lots of original ideas though…

Kgarello – Room reverb almost sends your vocals into a flanging effect, maybe a bit too short of a reverb and your vocals are too low at key points like compression is bringing down too much at key times. I’m not big on the hard panning of the guitar but they should have doubled the part IMO so we had to do something to even things out. Like the feedback part on the guitar. Cool mix…

Nafquo – Seems like there’s distortion on the vocals, maybe a little too much. I’m not big on the hard panning but the mix generally sounds good to me.

Bullshark – Seems like the vocals need to be eq’d where they would be able to cut through a little better…maybe some high end and less lowend. Maybe use a little more of the direct tone on the bass for definition but I like the mix in general.

Alteregoxx – Nice mix, the only thing is dealing with the main guitar part coming in half way through is panned all the way to the left and feels lopsided.

Coerce – Your delay tail on your vocals seems long. Also it seems like you might need to eq your delay because you’re getting some sibilance being accented in your delay. I like your mix though…sounds really good. The hard panning of the guitar doesn’t bother me as much on this mix for some reason.

pauloticks – I’m not big on the Room Reverb on the Rhodes at the beginning and the vocals seem a bit dry to me but in general things sound pretty good on this mix.

Kainz – Your new link worked fine. I like your mix and how everything is playing with each other. The guitar seems a bit muffled and could use some highend but it may start fighting the vocals and not balance as well so I might be wrong. In my 2nd mix I almost changed my outro rhodes part to a record player effect part but decided to stick to my first mix and only change volumes on what I already had. Nice job.

Schmidty – You got your file in right after I started listening from the top. Rhodes is too loud to me throughout the song and the vocals don’t seem to be the focal point of the song. Things seems to be fighting for space in the mix against each other…a tough thing to fight against but pull up the RPP file of some of your favorite mixes and learn how they are doing it and incorporate it into your style.

Hmh, thats weird. It's just a simple 320kbps mp3. Maby it has something to do with the FTP, I'll repost it using stashbox:

Camerondye,
Thank you for your kind words and also naming me Mixerman hahaha.
I named the track that so I am guessing it was I you were referring
to haha. I thought it was a very dark song so that's why I made the
Rhodes very distant and almost creepy along with the rakes guitar.
On a newer mix I have been messing with distorting the Rhodes
a bit as well but I am not sure if I'm going to stick with that or not.
Take care buddy and thanks again! I will be downloading all the mixes
shortly so I can listen in the studio.

Thanks, it's a bit rough still but I didn't really have more time or inspiration to put into it - struggling around with free (and unknown) plugs isn't really the most enjoyable thing to do heh.. I mean "Oh man I know this plug I've used zillion time would do exactly what I hear in my head.. now hmh.. wonder wich free/reaper plug could imitate it" - you know what I mean

About the guitar, yea it was intentional decision. I had to reduce the mids and upper highs in it mainly because it would tilt the mix too much to left. That little piano just doesn't pack the punch to fight against this distorted wall of sound. So either have a more dominant guitar (wich would sound better, I agree) with tilted mix and weak rhodes or more evenly balanced mix where you can also hear the rhodes - I chose latter

Your file that we downloaded was called mixerman and I didn't go back and get your reaper name...I'll change it so no confusion.
Thanks,
Cameron

Default Suggestion to add to vox

Hi everyone man this is my first time on the Group mix area. You guys are some talented! I love the song too who wrote and performed it by the way?

Anyhow if I have time I will do my own mix.

Anyone get the idea of having some of the main vox with the low fi radio sound just at the beginning (lower intensity mix) then kicks in louder intense with regular main vox and at the end of the mix before the ep finishes the same thing for dynamics change? Also kick it up on the solo more intensity. Such an emotional song not to have a shift in intensity more than some mixes I have heard.

This song reminds me sooo much of the Alice Cooper album DA DA a gem of a recording and mix (Bob Ezrin) one of my favs. Anyone else here that with this song?

I got some time to listen and comment tonight.

I just want to say that everyone has done a great job. I feel funny criticizing anyone's mix as I am just learning also, but here are my comments.

Xaenima - Great overall balance - I found the vocals to be the perfect level and tonality. I found the overall mix sound very mono... which wasn't my preference, but sounds really good in this mix.

Louie- Nice mix - I liked your panning choices. You were able to fill out the stereo field. The reverb is a little much for me, as I think the sound could have been more forward overall.

Camerondye - I really liked the way your drums sound. In the first verse, the bass and drums really accentuate the down beat - can't explain it, but it is really powerful. I think overall, I like drier vocals, though.

Sundevil98 - I saw your bass comments below, and I agree that it is to much. On the other hand, until I heard your mix, I didn't realize this bass had that much personality. Im going to download your project to see what you did to get it to sound like that.

Slops - neat interpretation. I liked your kick and bass sounds. Is that an octaver on the guitars? cool sound.

Wolffman - It's interesting that you pulled out some keyboard riffs that I hardly noticed. Everyones ear seems to center on different things. Overall nice mix. I think the snare competes too much with the vocals in the first half.

51m0n - I liked most of your choices, except the vocals are too loud and harsh(on my monitors anyway). Could that be a hi mid issue? Although I usually like drier mixes, I think that I understand what you were doing with the reverb on the vox, but the loudness of the vox took away from it.

k235 - good job. I think there is overall to much verb, but we already determined that I like driver mixes

Keefee - I think your approach to this song was much like mine. I felt that the tracks were so well recorded (the best I've ever mixed) that they didn't really need a lot of processing. Sounds good.

I've run out of time, thanks everyone for giving me this learning opportunity. Even the mixes that I wasn't totally psyched with have made me look at my own mix in a different way.

Here's my first effort. I really enjoyed the piece - very different to what I normally mix, but well done and a pleasure to play with.

Everything is JS or Cockos (that was part of the fun).

MP3 file is here: https://stash.reaper.fm/oldsb/1024165...1.2%20Toft.mp3

Thanks for the kind words.
I wasn't happy with my bass drum personally. Also didn't have a tempo so didn't tailor my verbs to the bpm like I normally do.
The guitar was pretty hard-panned but sent to a stereo verb as well which helped it to work better in mono , same deal with the rhodes.

I used hardware and paid plugs but my main ones are reverberate with the free bricasti stereo impulses, brainworx clean sweep and reaeq which are all free The curves on the brainworx stuff are very sweet and if you don't have it already dl clean sweep and use t for all your hi/low pass duties!
