Default Nice VST aural exciter...

I have been having an outstanding time working with Reaper. Coming from Cakewalk Pro 9 and PG Music PowerTracks 11, I find Reaper simple and easy to use without going off the track (no pun intended) as to why I'm using DAW software in the first place (which is to record music.)

That having been said there's a great VST aural exciter plugin available for free at MadTracker.org called 'excita'. It's got a nice easy interface and is as easy to use as the analog version of Sonic Maximizer. It uses close to the same algorithms that BBE uses and gives exceptional results.

Download it here on MadTracker: http://www.madtracker.org/plugins.ph...hancer&from=10

X-cita is still at version 1.2 (circa 2004.)
Still new to anyone who hasn't been aware of it's existence!

Well...
Depends on what you want to achieve. An exciter is primarily used in the final mix from the master effects buss. It would be inserted at the end of an effects chain because it's purpose is to give an overall aural livening of the final mix. However, it can be inserted into an individual track anywhere in the effects chain to achieve an effect.

the only rule that applies, IMHO is what your ears tell you.
Where does it sound better?

put it there.

Also the free CLAS does a good job: http://www.refinedaudiometrics.com/products-clas.shtml

CLAS is excellent, but we also have a couple of nice ones in the Reaper install. In the JS effects, one by Loser, and one by sstillwell.

Both are good, and each a bit different from one another.

Yes, there are plenty of great and highly effective enhancers available, several included in the Reaper install. The thing that hit me about E-citer was that the algorithms are similar to the BBE Sonic Maximizer (there are a couple others also, CLAS being one) in that it changes the timing of the delivery of the low/high frequencies, not merely EQ the mix. I'm looking forward to receiving a copy of CLAS from RAL to exercise it a bit!

One really nice point of Reaper is that it's CPU usage doesn't prevent me from using VST's (within reason) and that I can play back 24 bit work over my 16 bit sound card. I'm still livin' with 7 year old technology...

BBE is good in small amounts. I've also had great results with Crysonic Spectralive NXT, but only certain algorithms (E and F I think) and prefer the last version (2) to the newest (3).

I really like the exciter in Ozone, particularly the new 'warm' algorithm in version 4. The multiband learn function is great for getting good initial band ranges so be sure to use that as well.

Another probably less known option is ThrillMe by DiscoDSP. I've had some amazing results with it on a drum buss in the past.

Is ozone's any better than spectralive nx? Just wondering. What the differences might be.

The Lite On waveshaper JS plugin is good, too.

Antress Modern has an exciter too, I think it sounds great, I don't know what the "balance" control does, though.

If anyone knows, ... what is it?

Terry West Plugins has an exciter now, too.

And Argu Stardust is an exciter as well, also compressor.

These are all good, and most of them are free, too. I wonder how they compare with Ozone?

Thanks Walking Spanish but there isn't a Trojan in the X-cita dll. It may show up in some AV or antimalware as a false positive but this file is clean. I have had it on my computer for years and just today checked the present file on the linked website and it is clean. Thanks again for the heads up.
