Default Saving

Apologies if this is a duplicate post. I thought I ha posted it a day before but then I could not find it. Anyway:

Is there a way to save the current project to another version without this new version becoming the current project?

While working on a project I often makes some changes that I want to save to another version, maybe for later editing or a remix but I do not want to have that new version of the project the current project.

Not sure what you are asking, so my answer may be offensively simple. You appear to be asking the obvious.

Save as adding say "version B", "plus guitars", "plugin X version" or whatever.

A quick saving keyboard shortcut won't give you that.

Thank you but that in not what I mean. I'll try to make myself more clear.

I am working in a project, lets call it Mix A
I make a change that sounds good but I dont want to keep it in Mix A. I want to create another mix.
So I save it as Mix B
Now the current project is Mix B but I wanted to keep my current project as Mix A.
Now I have to load Mix A again to carry on working in it. This could take some time on a large project.

SO, I want to save a version of my current project without having the new version become the current project.

Hopefully that is more clear.

Still not clear to me. Someone else should be able to help.
For me it's not gone if you saved it! Just keep on saving stages as projects.
The original project is still there if you saved it and then saved any changes using "save as" for project B or whatever.
So that's after saving the original version without the additional tracks or modifications obviously.

Hi. I think I understand what you want to do but AFAIK the only way would be to SAVE MIX B and then UNDO the changes from MIX A AND then re-save this version as MIX A (otherwise it will be still called MIX B, right? Top left.) You will be prompted to say you want to overwrite MIX A so just confirm even though they are both the same!

Does that make any sense at all?

That will work but I have a feeling it is clunky as hell and that there's a better way. (Maybe by making an action and asigning it to one keypress?)

Hi uksnowy,
I exactly know what you are after.
Then following actions are your friends

In Actions list:
File: Save copy of project (automatically increment project name)
File: Save copy of project as...

There's currently three choices in the file menu:

Save project (straight save of existing project overwriting existing saved file)
Save project as (create another version of your project if you add a new title) &
Save new version of project (automatically adds _1 _ 2 etc) for when you cannot even be arsed to give it a title!
No, it isn't what you explained/suggested Softsynth,
you have misread my post.

Those are not options in menu. Those are independent Actions available only in Action list !!! And they do exactly what OP wants and needs.

E.g.
- I work on song, from menu Save As "Song 1.rpp"
- Editing further and find out that I created cool drum loop which would be nice to use in other song than in this one
- So I fire up the Action "Save copy of project As.." and give it a name ... "CoolLoop.rpp"
- But my current opened project stays at "Song 1.rpp" and I can continue there.
-- If I would select Save As from menu, the current project would be then "CoolLoop.rpp" which is not what we want.

TBH, these actions were added by Justin about one year ago as reaction to the request by me and few others.

Please, try it for yourself.

Why don't you open several tabs with your different mix saves, and cut'n'paste?

By Jove you're right!
This does exactly what the OP asked for.

Not only that, you can assign a new toolbar button to it.

If I correctly understood your needs, you can 'save' different mixes by using the snapshots. This ways allows you to keep online all your different mix sets.

This is true and I do use that facility for mix variation of the same track... but sometimes I am working on a project that start to morph to far away from the original and almost becomes something new. That is when I want to save it as a new entity.

At that point I always want to save it as a different project with a new name.
How else can you really remember what you did months later?
