Default Combined Interface/Controllers: Tascam v. Zoom?

Folks -- I'm a longtime Reaper user looking to replace my mixer interface. My Alesis Multimix8 USB2.0 is finally flaking out, I want to retain the mixer format and the ability to record more than 2 channels at a time (the Alesis can do 10 simultaneously). The rep at Sweetwater pointed me toward two options that would also double as DAW controllers:
Zoom R24 -- (https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/R24)
Tascam Model 12 -- (https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Model12)

Reviews suggest they both are solid as standalone recorders and as interfaces, but I'm not finding much on whether the controller features are really useful and work well. I've found videos showing the Zoom working pretty seamlessly to control Reaper, but there's almost nothing out there on the Tascam and Reaper.

Anyone out there have experience using with one or both of these *as control surfaces* with Reaper? I'd be grateful for any insights you can share. Alternative recommendations also welcome...

Thanks in advance,
Pete
