Default Which Audio interface?

Hi,

Im running Reaper on a Dell Latitude D810 - just playing about with it at the moment, plugging stuff into the mic input. Obviously this generates a lot of noise and latency is an issue.

I need to get myself a decent audio interface and im wondering what to go for, im budgeting around £100 ($200). Im also thinking of getting a midi controler keyboard and a mixer. I've noticed that there are keyboards on the market that also act as an audio interface - would I be better off getting one of these or go separate?

as your a brit.(me too.lol.) i'll reply.
cos your a drummer youll prolly need a multi input interface ??
or will stereo be ok ??
dont use the built in lap sound chip. not good. zzounds n music123.com got loads of interfaces...but 100 quid will be difficult.
el cheapest solution i know would be find a used mixer to plug in the mics.then take stereo out of mixer into a edirol ua1ex usb sound device. feeding the pc. but this would only record one track at a time.
prob is to record say 8 tks of drums at a time costs lotsa moolah for the multi input interface.

Hi,

I've just seen an add for the Behringer XENYX 2442FX - £210

looks perfect - if I then get a cheap midi controller keyboard and a decent set of Drum mics (that I could use for other stuff as well) I should be well set up to take on some recording work for small bands etc.

You are aware of that you get only 2 channels via that tiny usb interface that's included? Maybe a little too few for recording drums.

better off getting a better box and no mixer I suppose.

i'll probably just go for an Edirol U25 - I could hire stuff in if I needed it, eventually i'll get some kind of idea about what bits of kit are 'essential'.

If you've got the mic pres already, you might try the Delta 1010LT. I have no personal experience with them, but I hear they're pretty decent. The i/o are unblanced (apart from the 2 mic ins), and there's no breakout box, but 10 i/o plus midi i/o for $200 is hard to beat.

http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=96

http://www.presonus.com/fp10.html

those are fine external all-in-one solutions. 8 mic ins (which just about right for a drumset), midi, phones - you don't even need a mixer! (the IO|26 has even got a phono input!)

they slightly exceed your 100 Pound Budget, but you don't need a mixer, right?

my friend's got the alesis IO|2 (the 2 channel version of the IO|26) and is very happy with it. it used to bitch with reaper (at some point it started crackling and didn't stop until you closed and reopened it with reaper) but i think that was recently fixed (problem in reaper).
