[ALPHA] Improved video decoder+encoder using FFMPEG
Since it seems most of the video problems with REAPER are usually attributed to different versions of installed codecs, starting with REAPER v3.41pre7, the video support plugin for REAPER now has native support for FFMPEG:
You'll need the FFMPEG DLL files (available from http://aegiscorp.free.fr/ffmpeg/ ) copied into REAPER's program files folder (usually C:\Program Files\REAPER).
If properly installed, you should see the following when bringing up the source properties on a video file:
Also, with this version, you can now open QuickTime video files on REAPER x64.
Comments, testing and feedback welcomed
-Christophe

This is amazing. Sync is perfect in all formats I've tried, even when scrubbing/jogging. Thank you so much for this major improvement Christophe, now I feel I can make music for video reliably.

Yeah, you can FFMPeg-export a time selection that includes video now. Test that mf to death mate. Do it now!

Reaper 3.41pre6 (13:07 build) x86
ffmpeg-dll-r22716-win32.zip
Container: Quicktime
Codec: PhotoJPeg(High)
Dimensions: 624 x 352
FPS : 23.98 (23.976 also selected in session)
Issue: Drag and drop a video file of this configuration in to the timeline with the Media Explorer of Reaper(Autoplay and Start on Bar ON). It crashes.
Drag and drop it from anywhere else, and it imports properly. Video playback on some Quicktime-Mov/PhotoJPeg(high) files (23.976 and 25 fps) files seems to produce funky colours. Those files are the ones that produce the crashes when selecting them in the Media Explorer of Reaper as well, though not consistently either. When I drag and drop these files in to the timeline from outside Reaper, they'll import fine the next time I touch them in the Media Explorer of Reaper itself. The colour problem still remains.
The Autoplay seems cause these crashes. When I turn it off, the crashes do not happen.
The funky colours for some files remain.
-edit- Test with both RGB and other available colourspaces if that made a difference.
=========================================
Issue: The video does not follow the playhead for Quicktime H264 videos if the cursor is moving by single-clicks forward by small increments such as two or four frames. Probably an inbetween-Iframes issue. Click anywhere in the video file, then click to the right by a few frames. In the H264 videos with a maximum I-Frame distance of ten frames(you set set that up in the encoder of the Quicktime Player and anywhere else I suppose) this doesn't happen.
With standard H264 Quicktimes, which have an i=frame distance maximum of 24 frames, AND have picture reordering enabled, that does happen.
Turn off picture reordering when exporting the Quicktime, and this does not happen at all.
An FFMpeg issue ?

Is it possible to put the DLL files in "Plugins" folder rather than bare Program Files/Reaper? It would be tidier that way...

any folder in the reaper is better than the reaper folder IMO
or dose it need to be in the same folder as Reaper.exe?

For now, it scans the Plugins and UserPlugins folders where the user's REAPER.INI file is located (as well as reaper.exe's folder).
I just added the program files Plugins folder to be scanned also for the next pre.

Any comments on this, Cristophe?
Also, "Xvid" should be retyped as "XviD", and "H264" is "H.264" ^^'

I'm really hoping that this new stable decoding / shuttling means that christophe and the guys will soon be able to put the "biggy" that's to say "item edits update video position"
(I know we can posting about it but I would be over the moon if it went in and would be able to use it for my video work then (hence buying a commercial license)

Exiting developments, tho Reaper betas are pretty dam stable, I'm going to hold off on installing this yet.
So some clarification, the quote above suggests I need the 64bit vers of Reaper (and an OS to match) to get QT. Is this true? Airon's post way back suggests he's getting Mov payback on XP 32 bit (?) I'm a bit confused

Can this download link be mentioned somewhere in REAPER or is this not allowed?

well AFAIK its needed to export mp3's from Reaper (& to import them i think) so its more than ok to post links to lame here, (i guess)
as this link you want to post is not needed in the main release it might be better to wait in till the main release of reaper needs it (but i personally see no harm in posting it)
its not like this forum is privet & i GUESS!! the reason why only stuff about pre releases should stay in here is to save confusion with those that only use main releases,
but i have no knowledge of what would & would not be ok! i'm only speculating! so don't take my word for it

I'm talking about displaying those links somewhere in REAPER (maybe just in the Changelog or in the About dialog) not the forum here!
So new users wouldn't need to search this forum here first.

No. Obviously you "installed" them in the wrong folder.

Christophe, do you know why these DLLs are never updated?
Can we use the ones from http://ffmpeg.arrozcru.org/autobuilds too?

I am confused about the files/builds too...
can I pop all the ffmpeg files into a folder of their own somewhere? instead of mixing them with the reaper files?

Only getting 1 audio track extracted from a MOV

I'm confused too.
The last Reaper install I did (3.68) came with DLL's dated 29March 2010, well i think they came with the install, certainly this was also the date for the "latest" files on ffmpeg.org. (not so sure about this)
But with the help of the Reap community, thanks all, I have found DLL's dated 29July & others dated 16Sept.
So overwrote my existing DLL's with these 16Sept ones. (v52.89.0)
But still have same issue I had previously with audio extraction.
Eg; I have a MOV from a DVDPro-PAL camera. QT pro shows it as having 4 mono 16bit pcm Big-endian audio tracks.
btw they are all routed to same output. I can export these from QT Pro & the 4 tracks have different content.
Reaper Extracts only track 1.
Vegas "knows" this mov has 4 audio tracks but only extracts track 1 (the rest are blank).
Nuendo only extracts Track 1
Adobe Premier, Track 1 only
Tracktion, No audio or Video
SSL Pro Convert cannot extract anything.
Oh, btw of the above only Reaper can show any images, it's not perfect but plenty good enough (IMO) for audio post.
This must be a Q for Christophe, the Dev man who now has a baguette (rather than a sexy bum), er um as it were.
J
