The hooky riff (starting at 20 seconds - sort of dimebaggy I suppose) is what has made me listen to the track several times and become familiar with the less-hooky-but-still-good riffs/progressions/chuggs elsewhere in the song.
Very, very good. I know I will listen to this over and over again. My only critique is that for me, the drums feel like they could push a little harder. They just don't feel as big as the rest of the song. I am not sure what to suggest to that end though. To get bigger sounding drums, I have used parallel compression with quite a bit of success.
Other than that very small critique, I must say that I love the track, it sounds professionally done, Chris_P, you should feel very proud of the mix (and mastering, if any) and I can't wait to hear more.

Thank you very much man - having 1.) some of the riffs we came up with even being in the same ball park as something that Dimebag would have done, and 2.) getting such positive mix comments are really awesome compliments!
I had the drum sub going to a compressor (para-comping), but found that when I "mastered" the track, that I was really struggling to find the right balance, withough killing everything else in the mix.
Next track will be better!
Thanks again guys - this feedback is awesome. And, glad you all like the tune!

Just great.
Lots of very fresh inventive variation. I like the knowing nods towards some great rock motifs which you pull off without cheapening them or losing any of the freshness or, let's face it, the fuckin 'ardness of the track.
Everything sounds great. I could hear bigger drums but then at the same time I can quite appreciate C's point about where would they go? What possible little snicket of empty space might they then occupy?
Next please!

Weird, no matter how much I turn down the volume, it still sounds loud. Powerful stuff.
Solid riffing and interesting overlayed drone effects. Great collaboration. Your various styles gel together really well.
The distorted vocal sound of this genre is something I can't really come to terms with but, as a 50 something, I'm probably too entrenched in the old style rock view of things. I really like the bit where it goes to "Look at my face...", where the vocals are less distorted.
The phrasing of Shemp's solo reminds me of EVH. Very nice.

Simply amazing. Especially for those of us who watched this thing spawn & evolve. Who woulda thunk it would've come to this?
Excellent work dudes. I humbly put forth my bass services if ever you have a need.

Ok, yeah , this rocks. Its not unusual that I kill a track before its done here and on boards in general. I listened to this the whole way through.
Rock on, gentlemen.

its probably a little late in the game to ask this but, whats a good way to go about keeping the space? the separation is perfect on this track, how the fux did you do it?

I mixed it one piece at a time to make sure I was carving space for each element.
Careful volume analysis, EQing, and panning. That's it, really. I will tell you though, I did probably about 10+ different mixes of this song to get it right.
Two pointers:
1.) Never underestimate the power of a reference track - I referenced a track off of one of my faves for this mix - MachineHead "The More Things Change" (Ten Ton Hammer - AWESOME Andy Sneap mix). No your not cheating when you do this - it just helps you to keep perspective.
2.) Never be afraid to use your EQ. Carve, notch, HP / LP, etc. Sometimes the EQ adustments are pretty extreme to get everything sitting just right, but remember - use your ears too. There is no EQ "formula" - it all depends on the source.
Glad you guys enjoyed this song!
PS - This is a true Story - My son turned 3 this weekend, so we had a family party at my place. I was out getting groceries / supplies / etc. before everyone came out, and got caught up in traffic - I was so pissed. Then I realized what was holding everything up. It was a STEAMROLLER paving a new part of the road!
I got a laugh, and then had to blast the song while I rolled through town.

The only EQ thing I've ever used was the number 2 and 3 band, and I'd move them very slightly. I still have no idea how to use a compressor. Never mixed each track individually either, I'll give that a shot. Referencing a track too.
10 different mixes? Jesus!
lol @ the steamroller incident! thats just epic

thats an awesome story Chris. we'll never view construction equipment the same again! i usually do about 25 renders of a GIGAWATT tune before i have a mix thats competent and even then its still not as good as Chris'. we even use the same tools basically. Chris just has an ear for it.

Boah! This is quite extreme. Interesting mixture of elements. Mixing this must have been quite a challenge. Cool FX usage, too. Impressive!

I like it!
Very inspiring. I hope there will be more.
The only thing I don't like is fade-out end of the song. I think it should end in... hmmmm... more drastical way. With a big f*****g blast for example, heheh :-D

Well, apparently Chris' pc has bit the dust but he's working on getting it fixed. I have an upper respiratory infection and cant hold a tune or hear myself in headphones but here is a VERY ROUGH draft of our next one, Death of a Scapegoat:

Scapegoat = shaping up nicely! Lots of room for big fat drums and evil vocal harmonies in there.
No matter how wicked the music is, it is all for not if the vocals aren't there, but you guys obviously get that. That is obvious from SteamRoller and this new track.
When can I preorder the album?
