Multi-lane tracks
At the moment, we can have: - multiple clips on a track
- overlapping
- or arranged in lanes when overlapping
- or Free Item Positioning Mode (FIPM)
I think that another display mode would be valuable: MULTI_LANE:
[The track is set to Multichannel metering and uses a bespoke Layout. And, yes, that big MIDI indicator really needs fixing ]
As an example: this could be used for (up to) 16 lanes for MIDI, completely avoiding all that palaver generating 16 "MIDI" tracks routing MIDI to this track. And making answering the perennial forum question much easier too. The only thing you may need is the usual multiple audio output tracks for the VSTi:

For audio it could be very handy too, for example, for arranging clips in lanes, with the FX essentially being bus FX, no need for Sends.
This cannot be done with "Show overlapping items in lanes" as there is no control over which clips go in which lane; and FIPM offers too much flexibility in positioning.

If so yes yes yes.
If not, what would be different to bbb's request ?

Yes, the items could be moved but are constrained to the lanes.
beatbybit 's FR is the same, I think, but it did not come up in the Searches I tried.

Is the above, the first steps?

+1 too.I would prefer if it was audible only the lowest take because for alligning we have free item positioning.
So splitting the lowest take with some gaps would make audible the parts of the above take and so on.

Thought about this too. Item's would automatically be set to Always Mix.
Would be very handy for hand-layering samples, and better organization for things in sound design like creating duplicates of an item and doing things with the duplicate.

Not quite, FIPM still allows you to add items not belonging to any "lanes". There's just an action added to auto-reposition stuff around, it's nothing automatic as in being able to can actually target in which lane which item would go, and seeing separators between lanes.
