I'm not sure how this would be described. However, while playing, the display used to have a line showing where the music is being played. Now, I'm not able to follow along. I can hear the music playing, but it no longer shows in the display with the line following in the music in the tracks.
What OS? This is going back far in my memory but I remember there being a bug with certain rendering on .. was it different display scaling? Where the playhead (That's what it's called btw) wouldn't be rendered properly while moving. Could be that.

I have experienced something similar, mostly when using the MIDI editor.
It os probably down to whether or not you are stopping and restarting reaper or if you are pausing and continuing. Cant remember which but one of them allows reaper to pick up tracking where it left off & the other doesnt. Confusing till you figure it out.
Hi jphturtle. It sounds like maybe you're referring to scrolling. Enter "scroll" in the search in the help menu at upper right and it will take you to the scrolling options. It may have been accidentally turned off.
